Problems with net on galaxy?

I have a samsung galaxy s and this morning had to switch it off when i put it on im unable to do anything like twitter as there is no internet connection how do i switch this back on i had little arrows beside signal bars but this has now gone so not sure how to get that back tried everything i can think of
