Problems with my car steering lock?

well you probably need a whole new ignition system! or if you have an alarm on your car the alarm could be making the ignition system malfuction! but the most common thing that happens on nissans is the steering colum just goes out!
 
I recently bought a 97 nissan primera and I'm not able to lock the steering wheel, I know the steering wheel locks because when I test drove it the steering lock came on its just that I'm not sure how to turn it on. I've tried turning the key and the steering wheel but it still won't turn on.
