Problems with 2000 Toyota Camry?

I have a 2000 Toyota Camry LE 4 Cylinder. My check engine light has been on and when I've have diagnostics ran on it, it comes back saying the egr is bad. My egr valve has been taken off and cleaned with absolutly NO problems. I don't believe its the EGR valve that is causing the problem, my dad had disconnected the hose that goes to the egr and reset the battery and shortly later the check engine light came back on...my dad says since thats the case its most likely NOT the EGR valve. The last few weeks when I stop at a stop sign, stop light, etc and begin to go the car goes but with hesitation almost like there isn't much power. Starting yesterday my car seemed to have a putt putt feeling when I drive like there isn't much gas getting into the engine. I did smell a gas smell when I stopped earlier and shut off my car. Speaking of gas I normally have gotten approx. 420-440 miles to a full tank of gas, the last time I filled up I checked the milage and I only went 237 miles to a full tank and I filled up on Saturday night and I've only gone 120 miles and have a half of a tank left. Please help me figuire out what is going on. I don't have a lot of money to take it in to a mechanic shop.
