Problem with new son-in-law?

he told me story a (its too long to go into in this letter) then later he said story b was true and the two stories contradicted each other and when I confronted him about he said no no no you misunderstood me the first time -should I beleave him the reason im so upset is that hes maried to one of my kids and if hes a dishonest person that could be a big problem and before I get branded as some evil mother-in-law I want to trust im just not sure
