Problem with 1985 Honda Shadow.?

I have a 1985 Honda Shadow VT500C that keeps blowing the solenoid fuse. It starts just fine and idles perfectly but when I give it some gas it starts to chug really heavy. I'm not quite sure if its an electrical issue or a carb problem. All my wires and connections seem fine, the petcock is on, and I have a brand new fully charged battery that I put a matience charger on after every use. Also on the console my neutral light typically flickers while this is occuring and my tail light light will be off but when i start to give it gas it comes on and then goes off when I release the gas and this continues until a few minutes into it the tail light light just stays on. Then when I turn the bike off and turn the key back to the on position I have no power, and the solenoid fuse is shot. I have no idea whats happening here.

Well obviously you have a short. Start with checking the switch (key switch) and go from there. My suspision is that the short or possibly bad connection is in the wiring loom near the junction box.

Get a service manual and start testing all the wires for continuity. Look for areas where the insulation is off the wire. Look for badly kinked wires. Take a peak up in the headlight bucket as wires easily can rub insulation off there as well.

Time consuming, yes, but think of the money you will save by you yourself doing this instead of paying a mechanic $35-$70 per hour with about 6hours maybe more being spent to check the wiring harness.
