I am underweight and I just lost a few more pounRAB in the past few weeks b/c I'm so limited on what I'm supposed to eat. I CANNOT afford to lose any more weight. I'm 5'3 and only weigh 105lbs. This is AFTER I've had 4 kiRAB, am almost 29 years old and my normal weight was around 115-120.

I was told to stay away from dairy, processed and fatty fooRAB. Nothing is working and I'm losing weight b/c of it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to eat right for acid reflux but not lose any more weight?

I can relate to this as well......who would have thought we'd ever have this problem??? A few things I can recommend: whole, raw almonRAB; soy milk (I like the vanilla flavour but it does have added sugar in most cases); cereals; pasta with olive oil and garlic (if you can handle that!)...these are a few of my favourites.

Do you find avoiding the dairy is helping? I've tried almost everything in terms of diet and treatments, but I have never given up or eliminated dairy, so I'm curious.........

Thanks. I haven't seen any big improvement with the dairy but I'm not sure if I am doing this totally 100% or not. I have switched to rice milk for 1 1/2 weeks, however I have been eating organic eggs and some other things that have dairy in them, like sugar free fudgcicles. I will take a Lactaid before I eat them. I have been taking astrong Probiotics since January, along with digestive enzymes. I just recently started taking licorice root chews before every meal. They are truly disgusting and I'm still haivng problems, so I'm not sure what to stop and what to continue.

Yes I have taken the DGL too--I found I got used to the taste though I'm sure if I breathed on someone right after chewing it, they would wonder what I just ate!!!! Now I just take them before a spicy meal or a 'night out". I also take acidophilus every day. I odn't each much dairy--I now drink/use almond milk on my cereal, etc. But I do still eat cheese, yoghurt (though I do think that bothers me), and milk in my tea (once a day!!!). I agree, it is hard to know what to take or not. Sometimes I feel like quitting everything in terms of medication and supplements and starting over. I don't like being on so much Nexium but I am very fearful of developing cancer down the road.

How do you know if the Nexium is working for you or if it's the other things you take?

Since I saw no relief from the Nexium, I stopped taking it. I couldn't see spending $170.00 a month for something that didn't work, for me. I am really watching my diet (at least for me anyway) and I'm taking the DGL, Superdophilis and digestive enzymes, along with the strong iron supplements I need for the anemia.

As far as fooRAB go, I'm eating more eggs but I rarely eat cheese or yogurt. I am still using the Rice milk but that has a lot more sugar in it so I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. I am still having to watch anything greasy or fatty b/c of not having a gallbladder. I can only eat canadian bacon, no regular or even turkey bacon anymore. I feel like I have a pound of grease in my stomach if I eat those. I also eat cereal for breakfast (or 1 egg and 2 pieces of can. bacon) along with fruit (berries). For lunch I usually have a salad or small sandwich. For dinner I have normal fooRAB, for me anyway (plain chicken breasts, potatoes with spray butter, plain vegtables / spaghetti with added baking soda to cut down on the acid / sauteed pork chops or fish / Lean haraburgers / Brown rice or couscous / I will attempt tacos with low fat cheese and lean ground beef but no tomatoes / Also, beef stew or chicken noodle soup.

Luckily, I can eat bread, crackers and rolls without it bothering me. That's my comfort food.

Ah, the eternal question! I don't really know, but I do suspect the nexium is working. When I was first diagnosed, the GI specialist put me on Nexium 40 mg. IT definitely worked and I could eat more and be okay, but I didn't have much of an appetite and I definitely ate pretty well. There were things that still really bothered me. Then, either I cheated too much or the nexium 40 mg stopped working as well, so I added Zantac at night (through dr.). Then this past Christmas, I had a bad flare up and while waiting for tests, my new family dr. suggested I double my nexium......after a few days (and of course being "good" with eating) my symptoms started to subside....so I do think the nexium is working. However, I do think that it's effectiveness wears off after a while, which worries me! I'd rather not be on anything...but I do love food and have slowly gotten my appetite back. I think my metabolism has changed in that I weight less than I did before kiRAB and I don't worry about it (I used to weigh 132 at my peak, right after getting married and also after each of three babies)....now I hover around 117. I am pretty active and like I said, I do eat well, but I like my sweets.

I eat very little fried or fatty food, except for the odd dessert. Most of my sweets are cookies or muffins that I make.

There is a food chart I got from the makers of Greens+ (a green drink I take every morning---the equivalent of 6 servings of fruits/veggies and also "alkalizing". It gives me lots of energy as well (I buy the Greens+ energy). Anyhow they have a good website and it has lots of info re: alkaline/acid fooRAB. Interestingly, some of the things you eat are considered acid forming (like potatoes, meat, rice) but again, everyone is different. I have another book about pH balancing-it is interesting what it talks about avoiding/consuming........I'm just not disciplined enough to go that extreme. Maybe someday I will be.........

I have a drug plan through work so my Nexium only costs me $5 every three months...without that, I would probably be contemplating another drug or not taking one at all.

We sound a lot a like in the type of fooRAB we eat. I"ma sucker for sweets too.

I had no idea that potaotes and rice were considered acid producing. I just looked at that website (Greens) and it looks pretty interesting. I've never heard of it before and am always leary of trying products like this. I guess I always felt like it had to come from the dr for it to be safe but I'm definately finding out that a lot of the stuff that comes from the dr is NOT safe at all.

Can I ask you how does the stuff tastes? When you do take it (before breakfast, after, or is that your breakfast)? How soon before you noticed any change iny our acid reflux?

The GREENS+ tastes GREEN!!!! At first, I used to take it in juice, but now I know that I need to avoid juice, so I just mix it with water. I am quite used to it and really look forward to it each morning. It fills me up (though I usually still eat breakfast a bit after) and I like knowing that I am getting the equivalent of 6 servings of fruits/veggies....although I think I eat "well", there are many days that I don't get that many servings without the GREENS. That is hard to do with GERD anyhow as some fruits bother me and although I like salaRAB, the dressings can be irritating, depending on the base.

I don't know if I can say that the GREENS+ helped my GERD b/c I started taking it before the GERD, but it does say that it is very alkalizing to the body, and I have read in other sources that drinking these types of "GREEN DRINKS" (doesn't matter what brand) is good for someone with a lower pH reading like I tend to have.........

Another little tidbit: I said I like sweets--one thing I have found that I enjoy and doesn't really bother me are Digestive cookies (how ironic!!!). I love something sweet with my tea and they hit the spot. I have sometimes 3 every night with my cup of licorice tea!!!!
