I took a probiotic last year just to try it and ended up breaking out all over my face and neck. The break out consisted of red bumps that itched, however never really came to a head. I saw a dermatologist and was diagnosed as having sebborrhea. At that time I never related the probiotic to the sebborrhea, however, a month ago I for some reason decided to start taking a probiotic again and low and behold I broke out fiercely on my face and neck again!! I immediately stopped the probiotic therapy. Funny thing is that my sister started on probiotics that was suggested by her physician and she too broke out terribly by this therapy. I have since been doing research on probiotics and have failed to find any type of this "breaking out" as a side affect. Do you know anything about probiotics and its side affects?????

I'm curious also because I plan to start taking a refrigerated probiotic this week to fight what I believe to be a candida overgrowth. Do you think you broke out as your body purged its toxins?

I started taking a broad-spectrum probiotic on January 1. About a week later I started to break out a little and had extreme itching all over my body for about 1-2 weeks. The worst side effect which also lasted for 1-2 weeks was the abundant/awful gas (sorry for the vivid description) - and i'm not the gassy type  . I immediately cut back to 1 capsule before breakfast each day (from two capsules, which is the recommended dose) after I read about the Herxheimer reaction (temporary toxic or allergic symptoms such as bloating, gas, pimples, headaches etc. - these reactions are positive signs that the body is ridding itself of harmful organisms and their toxic byproducts.). Since then i've been fine and am taking 2 capsules/day, 1/2 hour before breakfast with 2 glasses of spring water.

It takes time for the body to heal, even just by taking probiotics; start out slowly with them and gradually increase the amount, assuming you want to try them again. It seems that a lot of people have had a lot of success in sharply reducing or eliminating acne through probiotic therapy (along with some dietary changes).
