Princess Robot Bubblegum (aka GTA and Rockstar's Anime Parody)

So, the next chapter in the Grand Theft Auto franchise, The Ballad Of Gay Tony, will feature new content for the in-game radio stations, tv channels, and Internet. One piece of new content, for which Rockstar decided to highlight today, is an anime called Princess Robot Bubblegum. Here's the genesis of it from Lazlow, who's responsible for the in-game stations, over on GameInformer:

"We made this cartoon called Republican Space Rangers in GTA IV, and in Episodes from Liberty City [BTW, EFLC is the disc-based standalone release of Gay Tony and previous installment The Lost and Damned],we made two more episodes. We’ve got this great animation team that does it all from start to finish. Then we were like, what other cartoon can we make? That’s when we got the idea of Princess Robot Bubblegum. On the radio in GTA IV we did these movie trailer radio adverts for a fictional anime cartoon called Princess Robot Bubblegum. You know, making fun of anime for being creepy, obsessed with women that have unhuman characteristics, big eyes, misogynistic overtones. It really needed to be made fun of. At the launch party for GTA IV, where everyone dressed up as GTA characters there was this amazing woman with pink hair and incredible anime outfit who came up to me and said, “I’m your creation!” We were like, we gotta make this a real cartoon. Anime neeRAB to be spoofed proper. If you are in the safehouse in EFLC you can turn on the TV and check it out.

"

The trailer is here. Gay Tony and Episodes From Liberty City are released this Wednesday for the Xbox 360. Comments?

Meh, looks like another Adult Swim issue parody that doesn't quite get what exactly its a parody of. The flash animation style really doesn't look right.

Thata either the funniest or most disturbing thing ive ever seen...so I will react accordingly.

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAA! (Cringe) HEAHAHAHAHHA (cringe)

Seriously love how it covers all the anime cliches & Steryotypes.

thats some funny yet slightly disturbing stuff!

I'll admit, I laughed at the trailer, typical Rockstar humor, I know, but I'm a sucker for it. I wonder how many of those episodes I'll bump into when I play the new episode from Liberty City?

I saw this earlier today. It was so funny and the fact that it was totally unexpected made it funnier.

I'd definitely watch it for when TBoGT is released.

Not exactly the kind of exposure I want anime to get, and it doesn't seem like Rockstar knows much about anime, but I still love them. The animation looked like something from NewgrounRAB and I found the parody style frighteningly reminiscent of Perfect Hair Forever, but overall, I actually found this to be really funny.

Anyone who knows anything about entertainment media can tell you that if you mention anime. The problem is when they, Rockstar in this case, don't know anything else about it. But hey, they're just making a parody and the majority of their demographic probably knows about the same, so that's good enough.

Would have been funnier if they were parodying all the extremely-sexualized-yet-with-no-sex moe shows that are the bane of anime right now rather than making the same hentai jokes that everyone has made for the past twenty years.

I'll be picking up Episodes from Liberty City, and I wonder if any of the lines from the GTA IV radio aRAB will be heard in Ballad of Gay Tony.

OT, but does Bogt have that idiotic relationship system? It made GTA IV more grating than rewarding after a while, parodies be damned.

Rockstar mocks everything, so I'm not really of an opinion either way. At least it's not weekly like Adult Swim.

Just saw it after I completed the game.
Overall it wasn't bad. It was good, alright, and enjoyable. As expected it made fun of the stereotypes of anime. I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5.

My favorite bit was the DBZ reference
