Primary chain adjustment surprise

I will admit I am not a wrench but can do most basic maintenance on my bike. I just finished adjusting my primary chain for the first time (I bought the bike used) and was shocked that the chain had absolutely no slack. I adjusted to the 5/8"-7/8" spec and now that seems very loose in comparison. I assume it is now right but am not sure why the chain would get so tight in the first place. Aren't those chains supposed to loosen with age? I did the adjustment cold.

I check my chain when I change the primary fluid and haven't had to adjust it in 4 1/2 years. Keep thinking it's going to need to be adjusted, but nope.
 
The chain was probably adjusted wrong when you got it.
My 06 FLHT got much tighter hot than the cold setting.
I didn't believe it until I checked it hot after setting it to spec cold.
I only checked it because I didn't think it could possibly get that much tighter , it really did.
You did the right thing in making sure yourself.
Now you know.

Get the Harley auto adjuster and never have to adjust it again !

I could never get mine exactly right always in between notches, then installed the auto adjuster, made a difference in shifting, a lot smoother and neutral is easier to find.
