Is anyone here interested in this new adaption with Keira Knightley in it or are you like me and think its WRONG to remake something thats already been done to perfection with the 1995 BBC Mini Series with Colin Firth & Jennifer Ehle?

I really want to go see the new version but not sure I could stand watching other actors play these roles when the 1995 versions were who in my mind I picture them as and will always picture them as.

Discuss?

It's the old remake argument... A lot of people tend to hate remakes purely on the aspect of changing somebodies opinions of history.

That said - it's already a book. Many people think the BBC adaption raped the book.

I haven't seen this, so can't really comment. Jonathan Ross seemed to like it a lot.

I saw this a few months back now and even though it isn't the sort of thing I usually into, I really did enjoy it. Keira acts without pouting, and the rest of the cast are superb. This might even get a few Oscar noRAB come February.

I agree with the OP. The original BBC series was just brilliant. I have the series on video and I can't imagine it being outdone. Jennifer Ehle(?) was just perfect in the role and made it completely hers. Mr Collins was unbeatable, Mrs Bennet superb. And Mr.Darcy...oh Mr.Darcy. No one else could have come out of that river looking that good!

I am going to see the new version. I don't know if Kiera is going to be able to capture the wit and sophistication of Elizabeth though.

Jonathan Ross thinks that this is more realistic in terms of the Bennet's financial position so that will be an interesting aspect.

What I liked about the BBC version was that it was unusual compared to every other modern version. Elizabeth is meant to be pretty but Jane is meant to be the stunning one in the family. These versions where they have the stunner playing Elizabeth just dont ring true. Not that Jennifer Ehle isnt pretty, she is.

I loved the BBC version. One of my all time favourte TV Drama's, and I have too say even though I don't find him in the slightest bit attractive but Colin Firth IS Mr Darcy end of discussion.

Yes of the versions made for TV and the Cinema Colin Firth is the best Darcy. However if you read the book would Firth be the best actor to reflect Jane Austen's original Darcy? I think not.

she was, very much so..more striking i thought..which is strange. I suppose its the makers of the movies/shows..they know that Liz and Darcy are the most central characters so they make them the best looking.
its something my old english teacher used to hate (she was a huge Jane Austen lover)
useless trivia: the girl who played Jane in the BBC version from the 90's was the daughter of the lady who had previously played her in the BBC version from the 60's

Keira doesn't really look like an obvious beauty in this film, especially not by the standard of the times (she looks very scrawny and boyish). I loved the BBC version, but I also loved this - in fact, I think I actually preferred it! It's very beautifully shot, and it's much softer and more natural in style than the series. I would recommend that anyone who loves the book gives this version a go, even if you have your doubts about it (I did, but I loved it). Believe it or not, Keira really is very good and is surrounded by an excellent supporting cast.
