Preliminary Hearing on Simple assault Charges?

I go to my Preliminary hearing on Dec 2nd and I was just curious what all happens at that point in time.. I Couldn't afford a lawyer and have yet to get a public defender(little to late now) Will it look bad going in there defending myself? Im not sure what to plead considering half of what this girl is saying isn't even the truth... My record Only has retail theft on it not because I was charged with the crime but because I was aware of the theft taking place.. Am I looking at jail time or just fines and probation
