Pregnancy and Exercise?

Okay here is the story: I'm 7 weeks pregnant. Before I knew I was pregnant I vowed I would try to lose some weight the next month if I didn't get pregnant...and well you know what happened. I knew that rigorous exercise could hurt the baby, and if you weren't really into exercise before pregnancy then you shouldn't start. My concern is that already being overweight, I have a higher risk of birth defects, premature birth, etc. I figure if I can lose a little bit now while it's still pretty early, I can at least keep my weight about the same. My question is: Is it safe to do a bit of exercise now, nothing too rigorous without hurting the baby? Or should I just do things that concentrate more on my legs and arms? Or should I just forget about actual exercise and just do lots of walking?
I do plan on asking my doc what he thinks is best when I go in, but still want your opinion.

Thanks!
