Pref application altered after use of JackFlash

I gathered enough courage to invest in JackSprat and JackFlash as so fervently recommended by some members of this forum.
My T3 seems to work perfectly after the operation; but the application "preferences" (ver.1.3) has duplicated in ROM and now has a double called JR Assist (version Error, created by Error).
It does not seem to do any harm, and it seems to perform the same functions as Preferences; but I am worried anyway. I can find the file using Filez, telling it is a locked ROM-file. Neither JackSprat nor JackFlash shows the file, so it must reside in the OS part of ROM.
Am I to return my steps and reprogramme my T3 to its original condition? or should I just forget all about this, as long as the Palm works?

The "assist" shows no icon and should be ignored - it is similar to "JackRecover," which is the file installed when you use JackSafe to restore all your flash after a hard reset. There are also two a68 files created as well, and they're ok too!!

It is harmless and should be ignored. Believe me - I'm a hawk for "errant or extra files;" they drive me nuts -- but that one's okay.

It was implemented after the "flash bug" in the T3 caused so many problems - another change is that you have to install JackSafe first after "initializing flash" for Jack Flash.

These changes add stability; the downside is you have a slight "messy" JR Assist add-on - but don't worry about it. It's "assisting" smooth operation but is not "user-activated" in any way. Mine reads 702 bytes.

However, I DO NOT have preferences duplicated in ROM - that is curious. Handango's "Security Guard" did the same thing a couple of years ago. I checked and my "Prefs" arent' duplicated but personally I wouldn't try to reverse everything if your unit is working fine.

You didn't move prefs to flash, did you? If you did (and I don't think you can) -- move it back. Apps only in flash - no databases.

Thank You, Paul, for Your quick reasponse.
As I wrote, I had decided to leave things alone, unless somebody gave alarm.
I did not try to put pref into ROM, they were there before, and the saved prefs are stil in RAM, as they change from time to time.
The ony DB, I took into flash, is the "icons-datebk5", as I have no intention to change it for a very long time if ever. Otherwise only programs went into flash and I enjoyed seing them stil on the launcher screen after a hard reset.
The only irritating problem is, that "appsliprotate" and "statusbarlib", which have been upgraded from the originals can not be replaced in ROM. I have to replace during hotsync, as Filez can not copy them from card, where I have kept a spare set. They are not restored by BackupBuddy either.
Still open to other comments.

No, appslip/DIA's can NOT be replaced - irritating.

I would NOT put icon sets in flash - I know Agendus crashes if the icons don't reside in RAM; if you're ok with it guess that's okay.

There is no option in JackSprat to remove prefs from ROM, nor is there an option to put preferences in FLASH - so I don't understand why you got two sets, if I'm reading your post correctly. JR Assist is a separate little "deal" and that's okay.

Just remember (I think I PM'd you regarding sending you a chart, but got no answer) that applications go in flash, not databases. Certain aps like ClipPro, TealLock, TealMaster SHOULD NOT GO IN FLASH. Saved prefs CAN NOT be stored in flash, nor can your address/contacts database.

Almost anything else can. I would prefer you have Datebk5 in flash and the icon set in RAM, but that's your decision.

Did you happen to look under the JackFlash program at "apps in RAM" and see if the cuplicated one could be deleted? Don't ACTUALLY delete it - but if it CAN, then send Brayder an email requesting their "opinion." I don't have, and have never had, "Preferences" app duplicated in ROM with an error message.

Finally - you did install JackSafe, right? That's the little app that lets you recover from a hard reset EVERYTHING you had in flash. It creates (in my case) an 18k file called JackRecover. JackSafe should be installed before loading other apps in flash - the new beta will not allow you to add it later as part of their T3 flash bug fix (along with JR Assist, 700 bytes). If you did not install JackSafe at the right time, you will have to move everything OUT of flash, release the flash, install JackSafe and re-initialize. Worth it since that's the whole reason for slah other than saving RAM - immediate hard reset recovery of your important applications.

Email Brayder directly about the Preferences thing just to make sure, though.

Just to throw something else in...

I too have a form of JRAssist...

On the normal icon listing there is prefs, with the usual icon., working fine.

Also, tapping and holding the "home" icon on the control bar to see the list of recently used apps there is... JRAssist.

Tapping on JRAssist takes me to ... prefs.

As PTL says, it works, so I'm not going to mess with it.

But does the summary above help suggest what's going on?

Thank You for Your inputs.
I also contacted Brayder support, and after a short exchange of information was given another version of JackSafe. After removing the old and installing the new everything is fine and no offending icons or entries on applicationlists exist any more.
The quality of the support given is to be recommended. It was quick, precise and competent. Besides it was polite, so very unlike PalmOne, who seems to try to impose on the customer the impression, that he is a complete moron, that should never had been allowed to touch such a precious piece of equipment!

Well now I'm curious!!

What is the version of JackSafe you were provided? Is it 3.0b14?

I'm wondering if there's been an update I don't know about . . . although at this point REINSTALLING would mean moving everything out of flash (50 apps), then releasing the flash, reinstalling JackSafe and reloading the apps again.

I wouldn't mind . . . but as a matter of course I ALREADY DID that 2 weeks ago!! Yikes . . . good to know though . . . let us know if you have a file manager (Filez/TealMover) you should be able to look at the version number and advise.

JackSafe is no longer on my handheld - no point having it, since I can't reinstall it from the card unless everything's pulled out of flash as stated above.

THANKS!!
