Predictive Text vs. QWERTY .... I'm amazed.

Oh really? You can LITERALLY fly?? Does using predictive text cause you to grow wings like a bird? I'll really have to try this predictive text thing, because although I can already figuratively and metaphorically fly in my keyboard typing speed, I've always wanted to be able to literally fly, just like Superman.

i actually like the SE T9. they learn which words you use the most and offer those as the first options when you use the right combination of keystrokes. but like many people have said, i think as long as the user has been using whatever system they choose for long enough, they'll be as fast as another user on another system which they prefer... then of course there are just the speed freaks, users who just use text on their phones soooo much that they rival full keyboard users and definitely blow hunt-n-peckers out of the water!

no, but i heard red bull does... have you seen my pics today in the sharp pic of the day thread?!

Paleo- Yes I can. You should see me waft on over to my neighbor's house in the next building. I've been told it's a treat to watch

I dont know how you figure this.

Following on Giarule's comments... I had the Sony Ericsson M600i which had querty and proper predictive text - in other words if I start typing Q-U-E_S..... it pops me up the word "question" to save me typing 3-4 more letters.

On normal mobile phones "predictive text" actually is mor elike something where you have to type every single letter.

And each one is slower than typing on the double-action key, which is the best way for a QUERTY IMO.

But that proper predictive and learning system should be like BASIC requirement on a non-querty phone, even more so than on a Querty one.

I've never used any 'double-action' type phone but from what I'm hearing, its pretty fast. I have considered getting one f the aftermarket progys that give s60 QWERTY phones predictive.

i find that both (for me at least) are comparable in speed. and i text a whole helluva lot (800-900msgs per month). however both methods have their advantages over the other.

qwerty: i find that i abuse the keyboard when texting with qwerty. what i mean is, that i use punctuation and accents. a lot of my friends ask me, "Why do you use commas, colons, semi colons, hyphens etc... in text messages" I respond, cuz i have them readily at my disposal (and i am a grammar freak). additionally, you can easily type numbers and special characters such as the ampersand (&). (though it can be argued that you can type numbers easily in predictive text too by just holding down the key of the number you want.)

predictive: the biggest advantage clearly is one handed typing. this is why not having a keyboard is not a big deal to me. i can text people quickly and watch 24 at the same time. Its very easy to text without looking with predictive text. You may have to look down occassionally to choose the right word, but still one handed operation rocks. Additionally, not having a keyboard means the phone will be much smaller (in most cases) so you dont have to have a huge phone to carry around (though if nokia wants to send me an E90, i wont complain)

You see kids, each method of text input has advantages and disadvantages. Experiment with each so you may find a method comfortable for you. Different strokes for different folks.

I agree. I didn't choose my phone (e61) by its text entry method. I chose it for its huge screen, email mgmt and browsing. Thats why i started this thread... i wanted to learn if people just used qwerty just for looks or if people actually could use them effectively.

this is a real interesting tread.... i went from a nokia to a htc brand smartphone for the keynoard... i was also pretty quick on T9, but the querty was very appealing.... now i must say, i dont use it very often, and it makes a phone mega bulky.... I cant wait to get an E65 (but funnily enough red is the only colour they sem to sell here in Holland and brown for me will be the one) for the size.

But I agree like previous posters that T9 should evolve.... I don't believe much effort has been put into the T9 software over the last couple of years. One should be able to choose certain words over certain others, the language thing should be solved, I text in Dutch French and English and my god its a hassle... there should be an easier way to fix this. Who makes T9 does anyone know, is it Nokia in-house...

for web browsing t9 is not much of a problem... i dont use it.... just single letter input, most of it is favorite based or hyper-linked...

but having said all this, I am really curious how it feels, life without qwerty once i get my E65...

I gotta say I write fast on both. While I was in Norway and only wrote Norwegian texts I would always write faster on T9. Now I write a lot of English texts too and it is such a hassle switching between the two languages. While using IM on my phone i prefer QWERTY cuz i use more symbols and might not write full words.
