Predictive Text vs. QWERTY .... I'm amazed.

Hell...I used to crank out T9 sms messages while I was on my motorcycle! My wife knew I couldnt answer the phone so she would text message me. I cant tell you the odd looks I would get texting in traffic and continuing while riding. ....In fact, I lost my old Nextel i95 years ago pulling those shennanigans.
 
Speaking of which....and way OT but what happens to Cingular Video when you get yours unbranded. WIll you still be able to access it with the ease you could when it was branded. I'm sure you can go through the browser but that would be kind of annoying after what you've already seen.

Phonephile - hahahah funny stuff, man!

Cosmic - IMHO, a lot of the issues you describe are relateD to the TYPE of T9 you're using ... Moto iTap is horrible. It tries to use the word that you use most 'frequently' but, of course, its always wrong. Nokia Predictive is pretty good because, even if you have to cycle through words, you will always know how MANY times to press the 'cycle' button... It doesn't try to guess which one was used last. It's 'predictable', which makes learning to use it a snap (for me at least). With symbols and numbers, there are some pretty good shortcuts for using them. One button brings up the symbol choices and one more press selects it. Numbers - just hold down the # key.
 
T9 - messaging, emailing. If you are a good speller you can most definately email much faster IMO.

QWERTY - specific wordage, we browsing.

Sorry I only read the first few posts so if this has been said multiple time then MY BAD.

PLUS, one handed messaging is key for me, its kinda hard to do that on my E62.
 
yah the joystick is better on the E50 but i still prefer a D-pad

I was talking about the SE T9, but what you're saying still slows down a T9 user because they have to cycle through choices IN ADDITION to typing out the letters. Basically, saying T9 is faster than QWERTY boils down to saying that for a 4 letter word, I can press 4 keys, cycle through word choices, and select the one i want faster than you can press 4 keys on a QWERTY keyboard. Doesn't seem very likely imo. I guess it depends a lot on the keyboard - if your QWERTY keys are impossible to press, you'll be slower with QWERTY than someone with nice big Nokia keys on T9.
 
Keep in mind also that with a QWERTY board, you also have to learn WHERE, in a 26 letter matrix, the characters actually ARE. With T9, you just have to know where your letter is on a phone keypad matrix. I guess it just boils down to personal preference. I can type full words, including word "rotating" or "choosing", much faster than on QWERTY... no question. Others may be the other way around.

With time, qwerties like the E61 will become second nature. After a few days I never searched for a specific keystroke...I just looked down to confirm I was pressing the correct one at times. I'm quick with T9 as i've used it for years as well but nothing compares to the peace of mind you have with a full qwerty. The only real benefits to T9 and the BB suretype is correcting some grammatical errors. BB also throws apostrophes and capitalizes words in all the right places. I would like to see Nokia release something similar to the bb suretype but that spells lawsuit if they try.
