Precious (2009)

This is a FANTASTIC film. It screened at the London Film Festival and got a standing ovation at the end. People were absolutely loving it.

The trailer makes it look miserable but there are a lot of laughs too...it's a really good piece of work.
 
Lol FortyTwo25, yeah same I probably wouldn't watch it again because it was disturbing to watch...even though it does merit oscar/GG nominations...For a Drama genre type of movie, I thought it was good, Glad things worked out for Precious at the end too...I haven't read the book though! xo
 
went to a screening of this last night, thought it was incredible.

i usually cry at anything but i didn't once at this and i think it's because it was so unsentimental, and all the better for it.

mariah was good though her role isn't massive.

on paper it looks both trite AND depressing but it's neither.

it's all about taking charge of your life, no matter what is thrown at you. the novel it's based on is called 'push' for a reason i think..

if mo'nique doesn't win best supporting actress at the oscars there is no justice in the world
 
Fortunately I found a cinema five minutes from work so no problems for me.

I watched it yesterday and found it hard to keep the tears in. The performances were so powerful, emotional and raw from the whole cast; the film has stayed with me 24 hours later. Monique was absolutely superb!
 
Watched this today and thought it was really good. It can be tough to watch at times because of some the content but there were a few moments that will make you smile. I think the casting was great and on the whole everyone put in a great performance although Monique will deservedly get many of the plaudits.

As sad as Monique's story is i think the film still gave out a positive message. In the sense that it's always possible to succeed in life in some way or another no matter how many horrible things may have been inflicted on you in the past which i think was good.
 
When I hear about this film I can't help but think of that little dog out of Silence of the Lambs.

'Come here Precious, you lil' bast***!':D
 
I haven't seen any cinema advertising for it yet... no trailers at cinema or anything. (Too early for TV advertising)

Anybody else seen the trailer at the cinema?
 
I watched the film today and because of the content you can't really say it is a film you enjoyed or liked. However i thought the acting was superb. Mariah's part is small and she does a good job.

Mo'nique was brilliant as was Gabbie.

I have read the book and would encourage anyone who can to read it before seeing the film. The book can only be described as both harrowing and hopeful.

It goes into a hell of a lot more detail about the abuse and there were times i had to put the book down and come back to it as it was too much. But so much of the book made me smile (not the abuse but bits about Precious and her journey after the abuse).

I don't think the film focuses quite enough on how much Precious achieves and how well she does. The book is only quite short and i read it in a week so there is time to read it before the film is out. Try Play.com for the cheapest copy.
 
Blige 'cried working on Precious song'

Mary J. Blige has revealed that she struggled to record a song for the Precious soundtrack.

Blige, who wrote 'I Can See In Colour' for the film, told Variety that the track was inspired by her upbringing in a New York project.

"[Director] Lee [Daniels] would say, 'I want it darker, bluesier'," she explained. "'Use your own life'. I went into the studio and cried hard, reaching back."

The star added that she also wanted to write the song because of her work with women on the street.

"Precious is why I keep telling this story," she said.

Blige recently opened a women's refuge in New York.

Having read the novel and also knowing that Tyler Perry produced (along with Ms Oprah) I knew this would be a good film - but with the clips I've seen and also the sundance coverage it surely deserves Golden Globes and Oscars. Mo'Nique and Gabbi are superb!
 
I thought is was a great film.

My Son also went to see it at a screening in Leicester Square a few months baack and got to have a Q and A after with 'Precious'.

I would have wanted to give her a big cuddle after watching it myself.
