Precious (2009)

All I gotta say is WOW...
This film looks amazing. I had goosebumps and tears in my eyes just from the film trailer.

It's been given rave reviews and 3 awarRAB at the Sundance Festival.

The film also stars Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz and Oprah Winfrey was involved in it aswell.

I can't wait to see this!

I've been told to avoid watching Precious in cinema. My friend from the US has seen it and described the cinema experience during the movie as highly annoying as the audience took away the seriousness of the film. There are some funny moments of course but people were laughing at the fight scenes - when Precious was crying and being abused by her mothers etc. And i agreed i usually prefer to watch drama films on DVD and not cinema.

Hence why i decided the other day to watch the screener online and i'm glad i did. You'll appreciate it more.

And the movie was moving and saddening and enlightening all at once. Moni'que really went for it in that role and she had me on edge all the time...so believable. Oscar for sure.

I'm looking forward to seeing this too. Especiall after the review on the bbc website;

Just back from a screening of the Sundance award-winner Precious which is featuring in Un Certain Regard. The auditorium was packed, the fullest I have seen it yet, no doubt thanks to the celebrity names attached to the film. Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz and US comedienne Mo'Nique all feature in the film, which was executive produced by Oprah Winfrey - who also comes in for some name-checking in the movie.

Carey and Kravitz: much more glamorous in real life
Carey and Kravitz appear in the unlikely guises of dowdy social worker and male nurse respectively, but both prove effective in their roles, melding seamlessly into the ensemble cast. After Carey's successful performance here in last year's Tennessee, (also directed by Precious director Lee Daniels) it seems we may have to start taking her acting career seriously after all.

Newcomer and lead, Gabourey Sidibe, does a good job as 16-year-old girl Precious, raped by her father, abused by her mother, impoverished and illiterate. But the stand-out performance comes from Mo'Nique as her abusive mother. Quite remarkably monstrous, but ultimately revealing a pathetic humanity. The reaction was very positive in the screening room, making this film definitely one to watch.

As a Mariah fan this is particlarly gratifying to see :D

The novel on which this movie is based makes for very disturbing reading.

The mother of Precious has a monologue in the final pages which is reportedly used word for word in the movie - if this is true then I imagine it will be a very difficult scene to watch..I had to put the book down for a while before I could carry on. Harrowing doesn't even begin to describe it.

I wouldn't mind reading the book.

Mariah has been given a lot of praise for her role as a social worker in the film. And according to various sites, one of them being heatworld, it's a film not too miss..
