PPIs affecting digestion?

So I know there is speculation on both sides of the argument. Some people say that because PPIs are stopping a lot of acid production, theoretically you would now not have enough acid for proper digestion. I have also heard that there is no affect and you still have enough acid. Are there any studies on this?

The reason I ask is because I have been on PPIs for a long time (going on 5 years) and while my reflux is under control, save for some annoying chest pain, I have very frequent stomach discomfort. I feel that once a week or so I wake up and my stomach is a mess (bloating, gas, tight feeling) for around 24 hours, sometimes more. I started a food log to see if I can pinpoint what triggers the day of feeling sick but so far I can't tell anything.

Any thoughts?

Maybe it's just the side effects of the medication. It causes me nausea even when I believe it's not from eating the wrong fooRAB, etc.,

im taking ppi twice daliy for LPR and my digestion seems fine, ie i have healthy firm daily BMs, PPI do however cause an inblance in your stomach as in good vrs bad bacteria, the less acid in your tummy may cause bacteria overgrowth so if you are not already eating yoghurt i would, it may help..........i eat a cup of youghrt everyday and also drink one fermented yalkult which has a potent good bacteria..........
