ppi or gap insurance taken out on car finance?

i bought a car on finance about 8 years ago and was forced to purchase gap insurance before they would give me the finance. i went on to have the car repossessed and so owe the money now to a debt collection agency is there anything i can do about this i've heard things before that people can do but don't know what to do myself
