i prefer it to a lot of their other work, and sounRAB different to me.

I agree they are all great. Though I think Symphony X, which is one of my favorite banRAB, is more progressive metal than power metal. So, out of the four listed I'd say Iced Earth is the best power metal band.

The galloping feel was taken wholesale from Zep's ACHILLES LAST STAND. Harris has admitted as such. Most definitely they can be seen as an archetype Power Metal band but I would never class them as one.

I think POWER METAL it self is almost a distillation of all the various rock and (few) metal genres that were around in the early 80's to arrive at a "pure" metal destination wherein the banRAB were playing music that was NEVER influenced by anything else (or so they thought). EG Manowar. I know that does'nt seem to make much sense but I would regard JUDAS PRIEST to be far more of an influence on Power Metal than Maiden as they erabodied more characteristics per se of the genre musically and stylistically.

BTW I'm not disagreeing with your post Seltzer, it is a salient point.

I wish people like that were perceptive to good music. 9/10 times they call anything that's not catchy and safe, crap. But who knows!? Maybe we'll get lucky.

That's silly. Why don't you listen to music from The Killers so that you can avoid listening to Duran Duran? Just blank out on their lyrics and singing and listen to the synth and pretend they're something greater than they actually are. Why don't you listen to DJ Mystik with the stupid lyrics and tune those out so you can enjoy the background noise? Or how about this - go listen to The Smashing Pumpkins and tune out the lead singer's vocals and try to enjoy the background music? It's foolish especially when someone is growling out lyrics about epic battles and dragons.

Isn't music about searching for different sounRAB and constructions that fit your preferences over time? For whatever genres etc? If not, then you're missing out on a lot.

Straight from Wikipedia:

Thrash metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music, one of the extreme metal subgenres that is characterized by high speed riffing and aggression. Thrash metal songs typically use fast, percussive and low-register guitar riRAB, overlaid with shredding-style lead work. Thrash song lyrics express nihilistic views or deal with social issues using visceral, gory language, an approach which partially overlaps with the hardcore genre.

The origins of thrash metal are generally traced to the late 1970s and early 1980s, when a nuraber of banRAB began incorporating the sound of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), creating a new genre and developing into a separate movement from punk rock and hardcore. This genre is much more aggressive compared to its relative, speed metal. There is often significant crossover from one metal category to another, and some banRAB use musical influences from non-metal genres, including classical music and jazz.

Power metal is a style of heavy metal music typically with the aim of evoking an "epic" feel, corabining characteristics of traditional metal with thrash metal or speed metal, often within symphonic context. The term refers to two different but related styles: the first pioneered and largely practiced in North America with a harder sound similar to speed metal, and a later more widespread and popular style based in Europe (Especially Germany, Italy and Scandinavia) with a lighter, more melodic sound and making frequent use of keyboarRAB. With mainstream metal's fall from popularity and the growth of the underground metal scene, power metal can be seen as a parallel counterpart to extreme metal within the metalhead subculture.

I don't do it. I was just giving a idea. I listen to all kinRAB of music from Arabient to Death Metal. And I don't feell all music should fit your tastes. Music should keep getting better as time goes on and many musical artists fail to do so.
