I got a phone a few years ago and reactivated it just over the phone, and had to pay all the charges and stuff, then I actually went into the store and found out they had a lot of good special offers, so I basically screwed myself over.. If you have to buy a brand new phone though, I would suggest going into the store and checking on the internet both to compare offers. The stores in my area are offering the 1st month free and no activation, and the internet for a while was offering like 75 off a phone or something? I don't know, just compare both.
The service is usually really good within the calling area, but I won't lie to you, Verizon and Cingular have more bars in my area. In my situation though, Cricket is really the best deal I could get.
If you talk and text a crapload, or you use a lot of long distance, its great. If you use a lot of internet and picture messaging, its great. Some of the other companies will charge you up the butt for internet and stuff, like using your airtime and charging per kb downloaded or per kb uploaded from pictures.. But with cricket, everything is completely unlimited.
While you have at least 1 or two bars, the service seems to be very reliable. I have never dropped a call when I had at least 1 bar of service. My friend has Cingular, and every time I've used his phone it drops a call, even with 4 or 5 bars of service.
Picture messaging doesn't work to some other providers, if you're going to be picture messaging to people outside of cricket a lot, I'd check to make sure it works first. T-mobile and Verizon work perfectly for me, but often times sprint and cingular don't get my messages.
I don't work for cricket or anything, but people say I should, I love to talk up cricket because I honestly love my service. There are a few times I get frustrated when I go out of the area and can't use my phone, but if you don't plan on leaving the area very often it is perfect. Hopefully this helps you a little..
