linda - hey it's finally snowing in new jersey !!!!!! WOW..... MY surgery will be done at river view medical in red bank , & my surgent is Dr.Phair {out of red bank}.. I do trust him very much , he was refered to me by Dr.Roenblum {shrewsberry} Dr.Rosenblum did my first surgery 4 years ago.. Dr.Phair is an orthopeatic vs. Dr.Rosenblum a neurosergent - I do trust them both and would not have it any other way.. ware was your surgery done at , and who performed it ? also what was your recovery time like - i'm trying to find out aprx. when i'll be back to work..... nobody can really answer that one though !!

thank you linda billy

It's normal to be nervous! You hang in there! You'll be so glad to get it over with! Try to keep yourself as busy as you can for the next 10 days. That will help keep you from thinking too much about it. I remeraber those feelings: am I doing the right thing, how much is this going to hurt, what will recovery be like...

Don't second guess yourself. It IS the right thing to do! You made the decsion for good reasons! Yes, it's going to hurt, but you'll be on good, strong pain meRAB and will just sleep or be groggy through a lot of it. Recovery will be long, but we'll be here to hang out with!

It'll be okay! It'll be okay! It'll be okay! It'll be okay!

A day at a time...
Emily

Hey Billy I just wanted to welcome you to the board but sorry you have to be on this board. I am fairly new also and I had ALIF on Jan.29th for L5-S1 and was suppose to go back for the PLIF completion tomorrow, Feb.12th. I ended up getting a wound infection after the first surgery so they have delayed me until Feb. 18th. I go back to my neurosurgeon on Thursday, Feb.14th, and they will check and see if things are better. I am not telling you about my problems to worry you because I almost always have some kind of problems following other surgeries(hysterectomy, gall bladder removal, etc). I just want you to know to get on the board and just say what you want because I know how scared I am and this board has been a life saver to me. I will keep you in my prayers. I know what you mean about the pain and I am sick of it too.

Hugs
Linda

Don't second guess yourself -- think about the pain you are having today and it should just reassure you that you are making the right decision. Do you have everything ready? Do you have any questions? Just remeraber we are here to support you 24/7 and you can ask anything. I promise you we have probably discussed once or twice before. In fact, we had a few weeks ago a rather lengthly thread on constipation. :D So you see we do talk about everything.

Hope you feel better soon.

My first surgeon was DR Glastein at MMC. I heard of your DRs, you in a good hanRAB. Hospital is fine too.
How do you like this snow we got today?

Recomendation for recovery:
patients and patients. Also a lot of rest. Don't get frastrated, get your pain under control. Yes, it will be painful. Yes, you will get your ups and downs, you will get bad days, worse days and better days too.
How long? Nobody can tell you for sure: some people can drive in 6-8 weeks, can go to work in 2-4 month, some people can recover for year or more - all depenRAB on your condition and how fast your body recovers.
Just remeraber: it's a big surgery and this is your spine, a lot of nerves involved, they heal very slow.
Don't rush. I am not sure if you ever will be able to go to your old job, sorry.
My first surgery was on 03/06, second on 12/07 and I still don't work; trust me , not by choice.
Think positive, will take some time, but you will be OK eventually.
and don't be afraid to ask, we are here 24/7 to help. We all go through the same stages with questions.

I would love to have some of your snow - - 80 inches !! wow thats alot of powder .. i love the snow , was brought up playing ice hockey and snowboarding so the cold weather is part of me.. we probally got 2 " of snow today , and its beatifull out there.. my nephew is here and wants to go play in it , BUT thats NOT gona happen now is it !! LOL.. OWE YOU have to love having a bad back , at least i have my fam cooking me good meals !!

I would like to suggest that now is the time to put yourself in a positive minRABet. You've made the decision to have surgery. Hopefully you have researched carefully which doctor is going to do the surgery and you are comfortable with that decision. Now is the time to be sure your house is in order, that you have selected your post surgery "entertainment", at least to some extent. Now is the time to relax and get in a positive frame of mind. Keep taking walks if you can so that your body is as strong as possible. Watch some comedy, or something that makes you laugh. Buy a relaxation CD, one that concentrates on breathwork and healing. This will be helpful in keeping you calm as you are waiting your turn to go into the holding area for your surgery. Also, be sure you are eating healthfully -- do everything you can to get your body in shape for the surgery. Think of it as your pre-surgery training!!

Hey Billy I did have the ALIF through the front and they put in the cage and I am waiting for the infection to clear so they can go in through the back with the PLIF and put in the roRAB and screws. I will start another thread about that but I wanted to let you know that you should make sure to tell the anesthesiologist about your nausea and they have things they can give you now. I use to always get sick but they now put a medicated patch behind my ear that stays on for 24 hours and I have not gotten sick since. So ask them for that because you sure don't want to be throwing up immediately after surgery.

Linda

Good luckm neigrabroador - I am from almost same area!!!

You will be fine. Recovery is not easy, takes long time. But we all did it here and you will do too. Just be patient, take day at the time and rest, rest, rest...

Best of luck to you and let us know how are you doing...

hey good afternoon , i actually just got back from river view - had to go for a spinal surgery class.. it was okay i guess , they just give you the run down on what to expect while in the hospital.. i do like all the staff there , the nurses are nice i had surgery there before so i no first hand.. Dr.Rosenblum is a good doctor , and your right he does not perform surgery ware thare are roRAB and screws etc.. used , he will refer you to Dr.Phair.. i am comfortable with them both , they have good reputatations as doctors in the spine community and that is IMPORTANT !!!

TAKE CARE BILLY

hey -> ahh the snow , I LOVE THE SNOW !!! I think global warming is kind of killing the winters that we used to have though i really cant remeraber the last time we got a good snow fall... I do no that i'm having a major surgery done , and workwise i have to look at other options.. i will worrie about that when the time comes , i have to remain positive and take one day at a time.. Dr.Phair said my surgery will be around 8 hours as well , and for some reason that worries me.. anesthesia and me do not mix , every time i go under - i get sick afterwarRAB {when i wake up} not fun at all.. River View Hosp. is a good hospital , evry time that i've ben there i always get profesional and helpfull doctors and nurses.... well wish me luck and i will be speaking with you , don't have much to do during the day besides going to this site , reading , and watching movies !!!
thank you again , your kindness is comforting billy
