It doesn't have to be dead for it to have a post-genre. Punk wasn't dead when post-punk came about. Emo wasn't dead when post-emo came about. Anyway, my favorite post-rock band is a dead tie between Sigur Ros and Explosions in the Sky. Honorable mentions to GY!BE and Mogwai.

It is using the normal rock set-up (guitar, bass, drums) to produce a sound completely different from 'rock'.

Post rock is mostly described as simply being this, banRAB that use rock instruments for non rock purposes.
