There is seemingly a sea of crappy local emo and punk banRAB and although I have spent much time dwelling over the bad, I HAVE found some gems (mostly through word of mouth). These guys, Miapollo, are brilliant:

The West Philadelphia Orchestra practices next door to me so I hear them all the time. Lucky for me they're a really good band (and pretty nice guys), eastern European music with a twist I guess would be the best way to describe them. Really worth your time to give a listen to.
