Portable Hard Drives vs. Flash drives?

I'm looking to store about 60G of information and found a really good deal on a portable hard drive - but I only know how to use flash drives as it's so easy. I know portable hd's have software and other features on them and have no idea on how to use them.

Can I use a portable hd like a flash drive? Especially as I'm not that technologically advanced to format the port. hd the way I would like it?
 
Portable hard discs are plugged into usb slot, pretty much similar to flash drives. You don't fret, get one.
