Ponyo to open on over 800 theaters.

I hate Ashley Tisdale, but Whisper of the Heart is my favorite Ghibli movie. I think the dubs are high quality, and a few undesirables are not enough to scare me from seeing it.

On topic, any idea when the list of theaters will be released?

And you missed my point... And she's not what I mean by "Disney Star." Its just shorter than saying "Disney hack that is popular because kiRAB are told that he/she/it is popular."

Likewise, if the script is good, but the voice talent is bad, that can bring the movie down. However, that's not the point I'm making with the choosing.

Ah, it wouldn't be a Internet debate involving me without you jumping on my back, creativerealms.

For all of you that missed my point, please read what I am about to type and understand it. If you don't, please don't continue to debate me, please ask instead clarification on what you don't understand because I am typing this up really quick, so I understand if I missed a point or two. I realize that my argument has been disjointed, so I am going to restate it for the benefit of all:

I am not criticizing Frankie or Noah's voice work because I have no clue what they sound like. I am criticizing the business practice and the reason they were cast. This because if this movie does better than previous Ghibli films and the focal point of the advertising will be "Someone with Cyrus and Jonas in their names stars!" Disney will think that using the name recognition of their current Disney hack that is popular because kiRAB are told that he/she/it is popular is the only way in which Ghibli movies can be marketed in America, and they will continue with the practice with the next Ghibli film, and perhaps make a choice that will ruin the movie just because of the name recognition. I, as an animation fan, do not wish to potentially see masterpieces potentially ruined, just so they can make quick buck off of the tweenage crowd that likes their Disney hacks that are popular because kiRAB are told that he/she/it is popular.

Perhaps. I will agree with you that Liam Neeson is awesome. He pulled off Aslan pretty well.

First of all, that paragraph was a migraine to read and I really didn't understand the point you were trying to make. Can you perhaps work on your syntax a little bit when debating? Thanks.

Missed your point? What point are you trying to make, exactly? All I see is you bashing a dub you haven't seen just to show how closed-minded you are.

Look who's talking...

How does name recognition ruin a movie? Disney isn't editing anything or changing the script. You're assuming that because these actors are associated with their brothers and sisters, they're talentless. That's ridiculous. They're actors--it's not like they hired someone without an ounce of experience to do these roles, be they relatives of famous people or not. You're acting like they hired relatives that have never acted before. Secondly, you're clearly being prejudiced towarRAB Disney actors in that you have the preconceived notion that they're all "hacks." Regardless of how the characters sound, Lasseter has love for this movie. He's not some faceless exec in it for the cash.

Why is Miyazaki's attitude xenophobic? Most US directors don't approve the dubs of their movies that go overseas either, or care much about the audience beyond the one at home, even though foreign box office can be as much as half of a movie's box-office take these days. Miyazaki's just being more honest and blunter about it.

Besides, considering what happened to Nausicaa the first time he licensed it to go overseas and the incredibly ho-hum reaction the US had to Mononoke (which was a pretty big deal at the time), his reaction isn't so much xenophobic as much as it's a rational response to verifiable past history. He doesn't give a flying pig about America because, as far as he can tell, the overwhelming majority of America doesn't give a flying pig about him.

I nearly died when I asked my niece if she knew about the movie, and she went "OH YEAH! Noah Cyrus is in it!". Obviously, she heard this off of Disney Channel.

It doesn't make me happy, but I'm still gonna enjoy the movie despite the fact a "Cyrus" and a "Jonas" are involved. I'm just hoping it's playing near by... I kind of live in the middle of nowhere.

Yeah, I pointed the trailer out to my 13 year old sister when it was shown on CBS last night (oddly), and her response was "yeah, it has Frankie Jonas in it". Granted, she's loved the majority of Studio Ghibli films so far (Spirited Away and My Neigrabroadors the Yamadas are among the DVD collection in her room) and I'm sure she'll love this as well, but it surprised me that THAT was the first thing she said about it.

Still, it's very nice to see kiRAB hyped up about not only a non-CGI animated film, but an ANIME film. After all the crap us anime fans have gone through in the past year, this looks to be that shining light at the end of the tunnel.

Same here! The film is also playing in a theater less than 10 minutes from my house in addition to the two others I mentioned earlier. Definately will see it this weekend.

USA Today had a great review (3 1/2 out of 4 stars) today and one of my local papers had a less than great one (C- grade) yesterday.

For the record, I didn't see any substantial promotion for District 9 until late last week and Ponyo has been promoted for about two weeks. The couple of you that insist on downplayng Ponyo's potential performance should keep in mind that most of the films opening this weekend are in at least TWICE as many theaters as Ponyo. BTW, Box Office Mojo reports that Ponyo is opening in 927 theaters, up a little from the 800 first reported.

I have modest expectations for this money-wise. I've been burned before and I know a lot of people in the mainstream just don't like anime, or anything without the name Pixar attached to it.

BTW--Ebert gave Ponyo a great review, thus unlike Howl's (which he lightly panned) this is critical and box office WIN, right?

That big long paragraph that I wrote was my point, and you missed it.

I check my posts for both spelling and syntax errors before I post. I'd like to think that my posts, content-wise, are written quite well, thank you very much.

Name recognition ruins a movie when the actor is cast solely because of name recognition as opposed to casting the best actor for the part.

Again, I am not saying that Frankie and Noah are bad. I am saying that if we support castings like this, then castings will be done the same way in the future, and the best person won't be cast... The person who the most tweenage girls recognize will be instead.

I understood every word you wrote. It's just that walls of text like that don't look good.

Sigh.

You'll never understand, it looks like.

What? Dude, its seven lines, and I couldn't break the paragraph up. That's not a 'wall' of text. Walls of text are really long posts with no paragraph break-ups.

Enlighten me then, as opposed to just making snide remarks about the defense of my position.

I'm lucky that there's a theater in my city that's playing it.

And I've seen lots of Ponyo trailers- on USA, CN, Lifetime, Nick... And I've never even heard of District 9.

I wanna see it, but there's no one to take me...
