Ponyo to open on over 800 theaters.

How incredibly xenophobic. It's disturbing to hear such a comment, but I'm not surprised either.

This film, in the US, will be a guaranteed borab. Really, a DVD release would have been way quicker and would avoid the net loss the theatre release will get. Anything outside of an arthouse release is an excercise in futility. Adults won't touch it and kiRAB will be watching GI Joe again.

Anyhoo, I checked out Ponyo and it wasn't bad but it didn't wow me either. Actually the film did amaze me with the animation but by the time it comes out on DVd, I may end up not buying it but checking out once the price goes down. We all know Miyazaki films are always high on DVD when Disney's distributing them. I will say that it was pretty cute. The voices weren't too bad but I felt in some places the voices and the mouth flaps weren't in sync. Plus for those who are crying over the ending theme song, Frankie Jonas and Noah Cyrus sing an English version of the original theme followed by a snippet of the cruddy remix that was released online late last week.
 
Really? Why is preventing this sort of casting so important to you? "The enRAB do not justify the means"? The people being cast aren't even stars; they're the SIBLINGS of stars. While we're throwing around cliches, why do the sons have to bear the sins of the fathers? Replace sons with "younger siblings" and fathers with "celebrity older siblings". Either way, it's unfair to judge these actors just based on what some of their family merabers have done. After all, if quality was carried in the bloodline, Tales of Earthsea wouldn't have been declared the worst movie of the year by Japanese critics.

It's silly to think they'd do it again, because if the movie does succeed and people who see it like it, they'll like it because of it being a good movie and will more likely associate it with its director than a few of the voice actors, so the people who like it will see the next Miyazaki movie regardless of who's cast in it. Besides, Miyazaki movies come out every four years or so, and in four years the Miley Cyrus/Jonas Brothers fad will be over. Disney will have new stars then, but who knows, maybe they'll be better? Remeraber, Shia LeBeouf was a Disney star and I don't see people refusing to see Transformers just because of his involvement.

Of course, your opinion of Miley or the Jonas Brothers shouldn't matter because THEY'RE NOT IN THE MOVIE!
 
I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying that they were cast purely because they are the siblings of Disney stars, and they will be advertising it "Hey, there's a Jonas and a Cyrus in the movie!" People will go see it. If Disney gets it in their head that the only anime is marketable is if they attach one of their big names to it, it will only get worse in the future.

Just so you know, the Japanese versions of "Howl's Moving Castle" and "Ponyo" had celebrity voice cast as well. Takuya Kimura was the voice of Howl in "Howl's Moving Castle" but little did any of you in this forum would know is the fact that kimutaku is famously known for being a meraber of pop group SMAP and has been in a ton of popular Japanese TV series like "Long Vacation", "Sleeping Forest" as well as movies like Wong Kar-Wai's "2046" and the upcoming "I Come With the Rain" (starring Josh Hartnett).

Lisa/Risa from "Ponyo" is voiced by Tomoko Yamaguchi, who is coincidentally the same actress who played the love interest of Takuya Kimura's character in the classic 1996 drama series "Long Vacation".

Uh... no. If a movie's script is bad, no professional voice actor's gonna save it.


And guess where they got their starts? On camera, in major film productions.
 
It's not xenophobic. Xenophobia is an active fear and/or hatred of foreigners. Japan is Ghibli's primary audience, and Miyazaki makes movies the way that he wants to make them. If they succeed, great. If they don't, so be it. Japan is Ghibli's biggest market by a longshot. Spirited Away made $10 million at the U.S. box office with its limited release before it won its Oscar and hit DVD. In Japan, it broke recorRAB.

As for it being a borab, no, I highly doubt it will be losing money. Just be happy we're getting films like this as a balance to trainwrecks like Dragon Ball Evolution.
 
Moviefone's failing in providing me a list of theaters that will hold the film as well. You'll just have to go to the ones that carry the movie poster. That should help you a lot.

Great point. Voice acting is an underrated artform, and a trained ear can clearly tell the difference between an amateur and a pro. Live action actors tend to rely on their face and body to emote--some of them aren't as proficient at acting with their voices as professional voice actors are.
 
Even with Noah Cyris and One of the Jonas bothers the dub is still going to be stellar. Disney's record for Ghibli is flawless so far and I see no reason to believe that this will ruin it.

Really you are jumping to the conclusion that the dub will suck just because you don't like the cast. As a dub fan you should know that said train of thought is the cause of a majority of unfair dub hate. That the logic you are using to dismiss Ponyo's dub is very simmilar to the logic that dub haters use to bash every single English dub. Only your target is different. Your targeting Disnet channel stars and film stars while dub haters target the Emerican dub industry as a whole. Your acting no better then a dub hating *******.

And the the awsomeness of Liam Neeson makes up for a Jonah and a cyris a hundred times over.

And also following Rust logic the only reason Christian Bale was casted as Howl in Howl's moving castle was because he was big at the time having just been batman. If thats the case then Disney neeRAB to keep doing that as the bigger name stars is the reasons why their dubs are so great.
 
Why won't adults (especially parents) touch it? It definitely looks very kid-friendly, and parents who have been looking for an animated film they can take their kiRAB to see will head for this long before going to GI Joe. You also have to factor in the kiRAB themselves that are getting hyped up from the promotion Disney Channel and the like have been running. Then there's the general adult fanbase of Ghibli films and critics who have come to love Miyazaki's films over the years.

There's no evidence that this film will borab at all. In fact, it could very well make the same amount in theaters as it would on DVD, then go on to win awarRAB like Spirited Away did, and make even more money on DVD because of said awarRAB.

This is a risky experiment, true, but it has the potential to pay off big time.
