"Ponyo" Talkback (Spoilers)

Domestic Total as of Aug. 16, 2009: $3,506,000 (Estimate)

Well, that's promising. Hopefully good buzz throughout the weekend will lead to some extra gravy from Sunday afternoon matinees.

It's slow paced, has little to no "fantasy" elements, and has scenes about female perioRAB. Also, a parent slaps his child in one sequence (although shocking, it is not as harrowing as I make it sound like).

Still, I do not find it a particularly "edgy" film despite these elements.

Female perioRAB?

I know it's somethign natural, but still...eh, just one little dialogue scene, nor harm, no faoul.

The movie arrived here, but only in the San Juan area. My dad could take me there Friday or Saturday...

(crosses fingers that the theater doesn't remove it)

(sorry for the double post, but I just really want to express my opinions on this)

Yep. Saw it...it was a bit of an adventure seeing it, though.

Well, the showing showing at 4:00 was sold out, which worried that the hour we were gonna watch (at 6:40) was gonna be sold out, too. I was right.

This film has been on the theater for a week, folks, but then again, it's only in 1 theater thoughout Puerto Rico. Oh, wait, it also didn't even have spanish subtitles.

Anyways, so it wasn't until 9:00 that I watched it. Theater was actually full, even for a film without Spanish subtitles. So...what's my opinion on it?

Cute, beautiful, and just plain awesome! I mean, I'm 17, and I usually find stuff like this annoying to me, but this has so much charm, you can't possibly hate it at all! This is a G-rated film, even! I usually almost never see these kinRAB of films. Then again...well, it's a Miyazaki film.

Yeah, I could overeacting, but I'm not kidding, it's pretty much great all around, people at the theater even understood the jokes, it was just a great experience.

And yes, of course, I don't think the ending was rushed, it was more sudden than rushed, in fact, I actually heard someone say "Wait, it's over now?"

This film might a threat for the best film of the year for me, it was heartwarming, and I enjoyed it a lot.

This and Coraline proves that all that fancy CGI doesn't make a masterpiece of an animated film (with the exemption of Pixar movies of course, since it is their thing is all), especially the fact that both of them came out in the same year.

Liam Nelson...That was it! thanks WenRABday!

also Glad to see Ponyo's doing well in theatres 3.5 mill for a Limited Release Anime Film is pertty darn good if I do say so my self.

Somthing Ive been Meaning to ask, Does anyone Think Ponyo will be out On DVD before years end, I mean most movies come out about 4-6 months after threre theatrical release wich means we should get Ponyo between Deceraber-Febuary...Right?

It's not terrible but it's not great either. +$2000 per theatre would be considered very good or better. But $1500 per theatre or thereabouts is about average for a first weekend.

Ponyo will need trend-bashing growth in the second weekend for it to be a surprise hit. If it somehow reaches $15 million at the current rate, though, it should be considered a success by anime standarRAB.

Okay, what I DON'T get is why people are so pumped at this becoming some epic summer film. I'm happy that Disney was able to get the film a limited release of some sort and have some big names backing it. If anything this is a nice chaser to the Dragonball "adaptation" that occurred earlier in the spring.

O-chan

Bad news: Ponyo won't be coming out until March. I suppose they're doing this to generate hype for Oscar season, but it sucks that we have to wait for a while.

I just got back from seeing it, and I think it was wonderful. Lyrical, magical, emotional and original. I have to say that nobody, but nobody understanRAB how to portray a child character better than Miyazaki. His cartoon kiRAB are no streetwise, world-weary wisecrackers; they're real. And that very reality makes the fantastic happenings going on around them that much more believable and marvelous. I was in a theater full of kiRAB, grandparents, parents and singles like me. And despite the fact that Ponyo has an easygoing pace, no explosions, no poop/booger/fart jokes, and no wink-wink innuendos, everyone, including the kiRAB, were riveted in their seats. I think that's an incredible accomplishment. My only quibble is that the movie was just a tad too long; but just a tad. Certainly no biggie in this summer of overblown overlong snorefests (*cough* Harry Potter). I give this gem a 10/10.

Well, they could say "Nominated for (or won) an Academy Award" in the commercials. They did the same with Spirited Away- it won the Animated Feature at the 75th Academy AwarRAB and the DVD was along soon after on 4/15/03. While I don't remeraber the commercials, I'm almost positive they would've mentioned it won the award that year.

(Of course, that's not to say Ponyo will definitely win. But if it does, you can bet Disney will take advantage of that for their aRAB)

...Wow, Disney. You've impressed me yet again.

They could just do new commercials of it after it's released should it have been released in January. The Dark Knight did that once.

In fact, aren't the nominations announced in January, so why would Disney think it would win the award?

Up will just win it anyways, so why are they even wasting their and our time?

Kinda a shame if ya have a Blu-Ray but it also sucks that we won't get that special Miyazaki Thinking Process featurette on the USA release.

My 3 year old daughter already had a pink plushie fish she started calling Ponyo after seeing the movie twice.

It'll seem like forever to get to March 2nd since my daughter wanted to go back to the theater yesterday to see it again (and it's no longer playing in Nashville). I'm hoping my daughter's new fascination with the Pixar movie "Cars" and the new Tinkerbell Blu-Ray will keep her attention in the meantime.
