"Ponyo" Talkback (Spoilers)

Oh, I didn't want to invalidate it. I just wanted to point out that (in my opinion) two of his most famous films did have antagonists. Cagliostro is kind of a special case since it's not an original work by Miyazaki. However, Castle in the Sky is one of Miyazaki's (again, in my opinion) biggest films and it kinda stuck out as having the most ruthless villain in Muska. I apologize for the misunderstanding.

On another note, just curious as to where you guys have seen advertising for Ponyo? I've only ever seen commercials during America's Got Talent, which is actually how I found out it was in theaters soon.
 
Nausicaa is definitely an uneven film, but there are sequences that really draw me into it. Like when Nausicaa and Asbel fall into that underground place.

I actually pick the fan-favourite Laputa as my least favourite. It plays out like your average Sat-AM action cartoon and many of the elements there are lifted from other, actually better anime series. And after watching Future Boy Conan, I couldn't help but think he did a "better" Laputa in Conan.
 
I just saw the film today. It's cute and charming but it's not one of Miyazaki's best. The dub is fairly well done for the most part, although I do think Cyrus overdid it a bit as Ponyo and the techno song at the second half of the credits was out of place. Otherwise, it's pretty good. Not as great as the other Ghibli-Disney dubs, but still good.

What a gorgeous. charming, wonderful movie. A shame it's weekend take was less than half of what G-Force made in it's fourth weekend. The kiRAB in my audience were totally enraptured, being remarkably quiet and only laughing at the appropriate moments. And not a frame of CGI.

2009 might go down as one of the best single years for animated feature films in history. Ponyo, Coraline, Up...and it's not even Septeraber yet.

Oh I don't know. I thought she was a great driver. It takes some skill to traverse that kind of rain and wind. She didn't spin out or crash once.
 
Oh... well I actually liked that film, and I do recommend seeing it eventually. I saw District 9 at midnight, but I may not be able to see Ponyo until Wednesday at the latest. (depenRAB on how Monday goes, thought I may see BanRABlam then if I have extra time - my sister and father want to see Ponyo too, and I may save it for them).
 
But you're measuring $3782 for a 3 day total per theatre. I'm talking about its intake per day.

You compare the $3782 to the rest of the movies released this week and you'll see the big difference in profit per theatre.

It had better beat Spirited Away, because Spirited Away started off with substantially less theatres to begin with.

Ponyo is expected to come to DVD and Blu-ray by the end of the year. We've just learned that it will be accompanied by new Special Editions of Miyazaki's first three films made after the founding of Studio Ghibli: Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, and My Neigrabroador Totoro, all of which recently had their original Disney DVRAB quietly discontinued. It's not yet clear if the 1980s films will be on Blu-ray as well as DVD. Provided they stay on the schedule, we should have more information soon.

I wonder why the special editions? To replace the dubs? (I hope not) Or to fix some of the glitches the abovementioned DVD releases had (dubtitles for the KIKI DVD, desynched subs for CASTLE, and, uh... what was wrong with the new DVD of TOTORO again other than it doesn't have the old dub?)

Anyway, the only chance I've got to see Ponyo is with a 2-hour drive to Colurabia, but the 'rents deem that a damn long drive....I'll be bummed beyond worRAB if I miss this chance. Never seen a Miyazaki film in theatres, and I've been wanting to do so ever since I fell in love with Princess Mononoke.
 
To each their own of course. I consider LAPUTA one of my alltime favorite Miyazaki films; similarly, KIKI, MONONOKE, TOTORO, and NAUSICAA, are my other favorites from him. SPIRITED AWAY, PORCO ROSSO, and HOWL are all some of my least favorites from him, and I unfortunately don't know where PONYO will rank. I'll decide when I see it this weekend.
 
I'd think the special editions will simply have real special features as opposed to wasting a full disc on storyboarRAB like the old releases.
 
If the cover changes, it wouldn't matter as long as the art's beautiful and we still get the Japanese sub along with the dub.
 
That's what I hope. I know there were fans who detested the dubs on all three of those titles, but I didn't, and I would hate to think that they are being altered just because a minority of fans disliked them.

Another possibility could be that they may have caught some glitches on the KIKI and LAPUTA DVD releases that they're trying to repair.

My comment was really made in part because her swervy driving was reminiscent of Lupin's in Cagliostro. I'd agree driving in Ponyo's terrain was more challenging than that in Cagliostro.
