I usually don't start threaRAB very often these days, but I thought it'd be good to share this news about Ponyo's stateside release with you. From what this article is stating, it now sounRAB like Pixar guru Lasseter and the Marshall+Kennedy couple are going to do everything in their power to make Ponyo a huge blockbuster here by giving it an aggressive marketing push and also a much wider cinematic release than what the other Ghibli films had when they were released here, so what are your box office predictions for this one?

Yay, new Miyazaki film.

That pretty much covers most of my thoughts on the subject, though Lasseter abd co.'s involvement make me a bit antsy for some reason... I hope they don't over-censor the movie or anything....

Glad to see that the main character is a humanoid water-thing, since the Wikipedia article use to say it was a "goldfish". That would have been one odd romance...

Pretty sure that there's a clause in the contracts that says Ghibli doesn't have to accept any edits to the movies as part of the deal. So, no censoring. The translation may alter some stuff, but that kind of comes with the territory.

Honestly, I'm not expecting this to be a blockbuster, PR push or not. If something as relatively straightforward as Princess Mononoke and as visually stunning as Spirited Away didn't exactly burn up the box office, I can't see something as quirky as Ponyo doing a whole lot better. It'll do well for an arthouse movie, but that's probably about it. I'd love to be proven wrong, of course.

(EDIT: Also, merged the thread on the Disney and Anime forums and mirrored them. Thought they were mirrored to begin with .)

No idea on the box office (would be nice if it's huge - anime and 2D-animation in general need a new revival - that art is not dead, and the world neeRAB to know,) but I think I now atleast one film outside of Potter VI me and the girlfriend will see.

Regrettably that review was written by someone who obviously hates dubbing, and I instantly decided that one read was enough. I'll make up my own opinion of the dub. Reading "reviews" about dubs from people who hate on them are just a waste of time and energy, and besides, what one person dislikes another could love unreservedly.

I'll see this, and I'll definitely support the dub, as I support Miyazaki doing well in America AND in having good dubs--the latter of which they do, but the former they really could manage to achieve.

Lasseter prays on the altar of Miyazaki every night. I doubt he'd ever "over-censor" Miyazaki's films seeing as he considers him the living incarnation of Zeus.

As for the dub, well, the actors named didn't exactly get me excited. But I hope it does well enough for some mainstream success.

I hope this movie comes to my theatre! if so I'll buy TIckets in advance! If not....I'll Go Hulk & Smash the Theatre...will it be a Wide or Limited Release!?

Lasseter would never touch anything in a Miyazaki film. In fact, I'd guess Lasseter's greatest dream would probably be to co-direct a film with Miyazaki.

/Hopefully Ponyo will give Disney the excuse to finally put Only Yesterday on DVD.
