Pontiac Torrent Brakes?

Hello,
My brakes are squeaking horribly and I want to replace them. I want to buy my own brakes however. I checked on tirerack.com and they ask if my car is AWD or FWD. I dont know the answer. Does it matter? Also they only offered me the front brake pads and not the rear. Do my rear pads not need replaced? Can someone help me decide where to buy these and how many to buy.

It does make a difference whether the vehicle is AWD or FWD. The wheel rotors are a different size. That means the brake pads are different size. The same make and model do not all have the same size rotors. Things like AWD and FWD make a difference. By the way AWD means all wheel drive and FWD means front wheel drive. Your owners manual should tell you which one your vehicle is.

Better yet, you should take it to a mechanic and let him take the wheels off the front and back to check the brakes.

A BRAKE SQUEAL DOES NOT NECESARILY MEAN THE PADS ARE WORN OUT!

Usually when the pads are worn out, they make a grinding sound. That's usually. Some brake pads come with what they call squeeker clips. They are little clips on the upper edge of the pads. When the pads are close to being time to change, these clips rub against the rotor. This causes a squeeling or chirping sound.

It is more common that a brake squeal is caused by glazing of the pads or rotors. In either case, you should have a mechanic check them.
Even if you do need new pads, the rotors need to be cut on a lathe to make them true or replaced. All rotors warp so they should be cut or replaced . If you replace the pads and don't cut or replace the rotors you will almost definately get a squealing sound and a pulsating in the brake pedal caused by the warped rotors
