pontiac sunfire 1997 2.4L conv. gear shift stuck, is in park, dash reads in drive,?

I had to use the emergency break to stop the car, key still turns ignition but car does not start, everything else works, though. What is wrong with this car and how much (ball park figure) will it cost for repairs and labor. Thanks
