Pontiac G5 and GM Downsizing?

I'm interested in the Pontiac G5, but I am deterred from making the purchase because I'm thinking that it might be harder and more expensive to fix in the future since GM is most likely going to drop the Pontiac name.

Is this assumption correct?

Yes it is.

They are dropping the Pontiac name and to be honest it makes sense. WHy have one car company making 6 different brands of cars. Cut it down to one. Unfortunatley I don't agree with them letting go of thousands of people because of it, but what can we do?

You are right, but for the wrong reason. Pontiac is going away, but you should have no problems with servicing, etc for it. However, I strongly recommend you look elsewhere for a car. G5s, like nearly any Pontiac, are complete junk. Here's what Consumer Reports says about it.

"A 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine powers this rebadged Chevrolet Cobalt. Both the base and GT models are available with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. In our testing the Cobalt was quick, but engine refinement and fuel economy were unimpressive. Handling was secure, but the steering lacked feedback. The rear seat was cramped, and the routing for the front safety belts hurt rear access. The rear seat folds 60/40 to increase storage space. A smaller car, a rebadged Chevrolet Aveo called the G3, goes on sale in spring 2009".

wel buying parts for any new Pontiac car would be hard but wouldnt need to worry about parts for 5 or more yrs an d even then pretty much parts wil be around for 20 yrs after or longer but why buy a Pontiac really since everyone knows they not great cars to start with ive own six or more and each one died before their time an drealy that goes with just any GM model neve rhad one last a long time is why i dont drive them is why i drive a ford you can do a real test just drive thru any shop have a look at whats there waiting to be worked on id bet you see more GM cars than fords try it and see you wil see what i mean its a fact its proves dodge chevy cant hold water since its all out ford stil hanging on while others are failing cant mistake that fact fords are number one

The G5 is based on the Chevy Cobalt... I wouldn't worry about parts being available or service not being available on the vehicle.

GM has been around for over 100 years, I wouldn't worry at all on either issue. You're not talking aboout a vehicle that is low-production, you're talking about something that is mass-produced.

**EDIT -- sorry, the answer above me is dead wrong. Just because they are phasing-out the Pontiac name does not mean parts and service on Pontiac vehicles will cease. I can walk right down to any auto supply store or dealer and get parts for my '88 Firebird... because it was mass-produced and therefore there will always be demand.

You are correct unless an independent company takes to making parts especially for Pontiac vehicles. If you're looking to start a business, there you go. Also, I think GM has already decided to do away with Pontiac. There's no chance it's staying anymore.
