J.K rowling managed to pull it off brilliantly with the harry potter and stuff, but when i try to write a female character, it sounds cheesy and sexist.
Hmm, that's interesting. As a writer myself I guess I never gave that much thought. I write the male characters generally the same way I write the female characters, except they are male I guess I don't consider the many differences between men and women that might make relating to them on paper different. But all of my characters are basically me. I am just putting most of my thoughts and feelings and beliefs into the character. I don't try to think too hard about "How would a guy say this or react to this?" or whatever. My characters tend to become fairly "real" to me after awhile and they develop actual personalities so when I am writing from their point of view it just becomes automatic for me to know how they are going to react or respond to something. I can ask myself, would this character say such a thing or do such a thing and I can come up with an answer easily enough. Anyway, thanks for listening to me talk about my writing style
EDIT: I also have to agree pretty much with shanks. Since my male characters seem to be more in touch with their feminine side anyway I guess that is what makes it easy for me to write them in a way that feels natural.
If you have a story line in your head then go for it. It might sound cheesey to you because your writing it. Every writer has that feeling. I have written things and felt the same but have turned out to be my best work
