This series was pretty good.
Awesome rivals for Ash.
Nice new character who had great devlopment.
Brock got a bit more screen time than he did previously.
Jessie got character development as well with contests.
new Villains got better treatment than the previous.

Cons

Pipulp got shoved down our throwts.
James and Meowth did nothing really the entire series.
Brock got pushed over by Ash & DawnXD

What I hope for...

-That newbie girls first Pokemon isn't shoved down our throwts like Pipulp was.
-James and Meowth do some thing more next series.
-Ash gets a fully evolved water Pokemon.
-Brock gets to use his Pokemon more and gets better treatment.
-Course if I had it my way I'd switch Brock for some one else. Lets face it, we all know Ash/Team Rocket/Brock will be back.
-
Gibbilbe
Or Buziel to come with Ash next series.
-Girl rival this time.

What do you hope for next series?

FYI Its been confirmed already and its going to be released in late 2010.

I probably won't watch much of the 5th gen saga at first. Probably the beginning eps just to see what the new girl is like.

I don't know if I can make it through yet another 4-year and 200 episode saga.

I'll probably take a break from Pokemon

Oh, the Brock dislike is strong in this thread, i personally have no problem with Brock staying, sure, he doesn't do anything, but i still like him more than Ash, who by the way has gotten mad dull lately, so much so that i enjoy watching paul kick his ass at pokemon just because Ash is so boring. Sure, Brock is even more Dull than Ash, but he isnt the main character. I wish a coconut fell on Ash's head and he got amnesia and he reverted back to what he was in the very first episode, he was far more interesting way back then, these days hes just going through the same motions he went through in hoen IMO.

I dislike Dawn too by the way.

I think (or I hope) that's something we all agree on.

Yes. Being thieves and trying to capture Pikachu for years has not worked out for them. Reinventing themselves and showing up less frequently would make them seem alot less annoying and pathetic.

No, aside from possibly the backseat part (seeing as he's still the lead character), this has already been done horribly with both May and Dawn. Ash should not be mentoring inexperienced newbie girls, he should let them grow on their own like he did. And he shouldn't even be in the show anymore. I'd take a whole new cast with no Ash over Ash as a backseat mentor.

Defenitely yes. 90% of the show these days are filler episodes where Team Rocket bothers Ash and the others, gym battle episodes where Team Rocket bothers them, and contest episodes where Team Rocket bothers them. More storylines with real villains like Team Galactic and Hunter J could do alot of good to the anime, but those stories are only the 10%.

The animation they have nows as good as it's gonna get, so I doubt they'll change it. Though I personally liked the cel-shaded style of animation they had back in mid-Johto the best. Too much digital animation can get boring.

"Griping" about this anime is better than just swallowing its' tripe like you seem to be doing. Just ask Cybercubed and the rest of us. We have every right and reason to express distates towarRAB the show's many flaws and wasted potential. By calling us fandurab because we don't think and act like you do makes YOU seem more like fandurab here, not us.

But if you insist on calling us durab, then the term you're looking for here is HATEdurab, not FANdurab. Not all of us are real fans of the anime, so the term of "fandurab" isn't really appropriate at all.

You don't have to take a break from Pokemon; just the Pokemon anime. It'd be one of the wisest decisions you could ever make, Cybercubed. Trust me.

Actually, I don't think that Brock should leave. I wouldn't be crushed if the writers do decide to replace him with another character, but I don't want him to leave. Even though he's a secondary character who doesn't have an active role like Ash and Dawn, I like him. He's pretty fun and he can be a funny character too. I think that he should have a bit more focus than he does currently, but I still like him.

While I agree that Team Rocket are better at being more like frienRAB/supporters for Ash and his frienRAB than being villains, I'm not sure if they'll really make them appear less frequently.

I don't think that Ash grew on his own. He had Misty and Brock helping him and offering advice, similar to his relationship with May and Dawn. He's already an experienced trainer, so I don't see it as strange for him to offer advice for new trainers. While I understand where you're coming from about preferring a new cast with no Ash, considering he's been here for thirteen years, I seriously doubt that they'll replace him anytime soon.

I'm not sure if ninety percent of the show are filler, gym battle and Contest episodes. There are a few other kind of episodes, like capture episodes, training, learning new moves and evolution episodes, that also count. I wouldn't mind seeing more episodes with villains like Team Galactic and Hunter J though. To be fair, if they did use them too often, it might have been too much and they could have lost their appeal. Plus, even though Team Galactic didn't show up that often, they did cover almost all of the important Team Galactic events from the Diamond and Pearl games into the series, so they did a fairly good adaptation of that part of the games.

I agree that everyone has the right to express their distaste for this show, or any show for that matter. I'm not sure if it is better than accepting the anime series though. It would be nice to see some more serious storylines with more intense villains, but I'm basically fine with how the series is. But that's just me. I usually understand where people are coming from with their dislikes and issues towarRAB how the series works, even if I disagree with those opinions as well.

I wouldn't say that James and Meowth did nothing throughout the whole D/P series. They did help Jessie get her third ribbon. While Jessie does get the main focus due to being a coordinator, they get a decent amount of attention. I wouldn't mind it if they get more attention in the next series though. I also agree with you about not having another starter like Piplup getting so much screentime.

If Dawn is replaced by the female trainer in Black and White, which is most likely going to happen, I hope that she is more likable to me. While I don't seriously dislike Dawn, I don't really like her that much either. I liked her at the beginning, but then as the series progressed, I just didn't like her. It probably helps that she used Piplup so much that she didn't give a lot of attention to Buneary and Pachirisu.

I also hope that this new female trainer actually teaches her Pokemon attacks. Dawn rarely taught her Pokemon attacks. Most of the time, the new attacks just appeared. The only time I remeraber that she did try to teach a Pokemon an attack was Mamoswine.

As for Ash, I'm just hoping for another cool, fairly well developed team. A fully evolved Water type would nice, but his most impressive Water types haven't evolved. I also would love a female rival. Lyra did prove that a female trainer being interested in gym battles could be interesting and it would be a nice change of pace.

The reason why Ash might feel so good at the beginning, was that he didn't know a whole lot, was new, and we hadn't seen as many adventures/episodes/seasons.

Having the same main character/other characters + many seasons/episodes = people getting bored/upset.

The most similar, in my mind, is The Simpsons. Many people don't seem to like the new episodes, because they find them pointless and boring. They wish it would go back to 10, if not later, in years ago when it was "good." Same with Pokemon. Both shows have been around so long, that many people have seen so many episodes, that it feel pointless and not as exciting any more. They liked the shows, back when the episodes weren't as many in nurabers, and the episodes seemed new. Both, however, seem to still be making money (not 100% on The Simpsons), so they'll probably keep going, untill/unless something major happens.

With Pokemon, I don't see the cycle changing much, because, like others said, the writers probably don't care about people that watch it when if first aired, because they aren't the "target group". The reason they might change the girl, is to get the same feel for each group of kiRAB that watch, and about 4 years seems to be how long the "average kid" watches. Each group has their own "version" of Pokemon.

I was hoping we'd revisit Johto like we did Kanto in Advanced Generation for another Frontier Brain arc, but since Gen 5 is so close I doubt we will; unless it's a short 10 or so episode arc where all the Frontier Brains are gathered in one spot like in the games.

-I like Dawn, but chances are she'll be ditched for the new sporty-looking girl, depsite the fact she dresses pretty much like Dawn does (with a bit of Lyra mixed in). I hope she gets as much development as Dawn did, who is my favorite Pokemon girl because of it
-I liked what they did with Jesse by giving her a purpose with the contests, so I hope to see more of that
-I liked Paul as a rival to Ash; more serious/cold, showed up more often, and offered a good contrast to Ash's own training techniques. I'd like for him to either return or for a new rival to be similar (though different enough to avoid being just a clone. Like metnioned, maybe even make his rival a female and play with a bit of shipteasing between the two of them)
-I also liked Barry and the side rivals like Zoey, Nando, Kenny, Ursula, and so forth. More side-rivals would be nice.
-Hunter J was a nice addition, a more ruthless and cold villain, along with Team Galactic. Side characters like her, Looker, Marley, and the other trainers from the game made for some good episodes

I guess all those boil down to 'more of the same type of stuff' but as for something new, I think it's time to revamp James and Brock like they did for Jesse/Ash's female traveling companion. I think they should introduce a new event, either PokeRinger (since James already shows an interest in it) or maybe Pokeathalon or something entirely new. That way, James and Brock can both compete in that while the new girl/Jesse competes in contests and Ash does gym battles. It would also help cut down on filler a bit by letting them use the excess episodes for those competitions, as well as giving Brock and James morepurpose outside of comic relief.

Or maybe, judging by the way the new girl looks, she'll do Pokeathalons and Brock might do contests again. Who knows. I just hope they keep up the same level of development they already do, while branching out and doing more with James and Brock.

I'll probaly watch, mean I like watching for Ash and his adventures any ways, not newbie girls and adventures in contests
I liked AG contests more than D/P ones out of them. I mean, it had far more intresting rivals that time around. I can only imagine what they'd do for the newbie girl now. Did you see that one appearnce charater? Looked like a girl version of Kenny Just knock out contests next time, bring in a new side quest for them. Ash would probaly take part in it a few at first like he did with contests. Ash always has to do new things right away, I like it

I was going to type out some huge reply, but Marn pretty much hit the nail on the head for most of my hopes and speculation. Also, since Dawn has become my favorite Pokemon character, I've got a small bit of hope she continues into the 5th gen, but taking on the outfit of the Gen V girl since the two look extremely similar. It probably won't happen, but the chance is there.

But yes, definitely do something with James and Brock. I don't care what, but those two as of now are just walking props for their groups, and they only ever get a few times to shine per region nowadays. Jessie finally got a purpose in Sinnoh, now give those two one aside from providing food and funRAB.

I think that's what's sad about Pokemon. The potential has always been there, and each new saga does have its share of great episodes and nice new characters at certain points, but its still spinning its wheels.

The other big problem is every time a saga enRAB, by the time the next one starts you feel like everything you just watched was pointless. Since there is a huge "clean slate" at the beginning of every saga, you feel like everything that was accomplished in the previous arc didn't matter.

No matter how strong Ash's team gets, its resetted for new Pokemon in the next arc. No matter how much character development Misty/May/Dawn go through, its pretty much forgotten by the time the next new girl is brought into the show.

And then there is Brock who should have been done away with ages ago.

I still don't really see that as sad. Yes, Pokemon could be much better and more along the lines of Adventure/Special, which I'm sure a lot of people, even me, would love, but I don't really expect that to happen. Pokemon is a repetitive series. Even the video games, in the main series at least, are repetitive. I just love and accept the series for what it is. Nothing more and nothing less.

I don't really agree with that idea. If a person enjoyed the saga, then it wasn't pointless. Besides, even though Pokemon doesn't have a heavy amount of continunity, they have referred to some events in past sagas every now and then, which obviously doesn't make them pointless. I think that they don't refer to past sagas too often so that they don't alienate their audience, who might not have been interested or even old enough to watch the series during some of the older sagas.

Plus, I don't see how character development is pointless. There's also the fact that when Ash returns to Pallet Town, we usually see his older Pokemon at Prof. Oak's lab, which would also make previous arcs count since those do show how he caught all of those Pokemon.

I don't see how Ash getting a new team is bad. Like I mentioned before, it develops his skills as a trainer, prevents him from relying on his more experienced Pokemon, which would make things too easy for him anyway, and promotes the recent generation of Pokemon.

I also don't know what you mean that the character development for Misty, May and Dawn is forgotten by the time a new girl gets into the show. Plenty of people remeraber the way May developed during her run in the series and people certainly didn't forget Misty, although I'm not sure how much development she actually has compared to May and Dawn right now.

If you're talking about their development being referred to in the series, then that would go back to the writers not wanting to alienate their audience. If they mentioned the previous girl so often, some kiRAB who weren't interested in the series back then might not understand what they're referring to or who the character even is. Besides that, since they aren't in the main cast anymore, at least Misty and May, it wouldn't make sense of often refer back to them since they don't have a significant role in the current saga.

If the writers/producers didn't think that he was useful/necessary at some level, then they wouldn't have kept him in the main cast since Johto. Maybe his purpose as the knowledgeable mentor/comic relief appeals to kiRAB so that they understand some of the aspects of the battles and for a good laugh with his love daze gag.

"The Old Timer: (Also known as "Methuselah") The Old Timer's been around since the beginning (or a very long time, anyway), and isn't going to let you forget it. They too have an overdeveloped sense of entitlement, but this time it's based on how much time they've invested rather than money, or devotion. Because they?ve stuck with it over the years, they believe that they're far more important to the franchise than these kiRAB and 'Johnny-come-latelys' who have only just arrived, and resent the show changing in any way to include them. They view the franchise through a sharp Nostalgia Filter; the show is never as good as How It Used To Be, and any criticisms raised of the show at / before this point will be viciously rebuffed."

The Purist: a fan who has an idealised vision of what the show should be and isn't going to let anything or anyone affect or change that vision... not even the show itself. They tend to react to any changes made in the show's format with hostility and suspicion. Although often a fan who's been burned by Adaptation Decay or obvious merchandise pandering gone wrong, some just simply don't like change and respond to it with pram-shaking tantrums."

Based off of what I've been reading in this thread some of the posters seem to fall in these two categories, so yes, I think the term is quite appropriate.

But anyway to get my point all I'm saying is there's no use crying over spilled milk. You can complain till kingdom come about all the shows numerous faults, but it won't help. Ratings are good and merch continues to sell so the status quo stanRAB. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying you guys have to cease all forms of criticism or that your criticism is wrong but there comes a point when you have to realize certain stuff just aint happening no matter how much you want it to. The cast wont get personality changes, Ash isn't going to become a master, Brock and Team Rocket are staying, the story lines wont become considerably more mature or better written, filler is unavoidably, and The Theorem Of Narrow Interests will forever rule the day. If you cant accept that then its time to get out and never look back or continue being a masochist for a crappy show.

I'm a firm believer that discussion that involves pipe dreams and hate dont make for good threaRAB but apparently I'm in the minority when it comes to this

Hate discussions don't make for good threaRAB. Criticism and debates do, which is what I'd like to think we're doing on this thread. But if you're that against it, then it's no use even posting on this thread now is it?

Let's see, what do I want for the next anime series?

Basically, overhaul the character roster.

-Infuse Ash with some personality. He was a lot more fun when he was just a durab kid, but now that he's competent, he's lost a great deal of what made him a fun and interesting character, I think.

-Get rid of Brock. Sure, he can be amusing from time to time, but he outlived his usefulness long ago.

-Get a girl character who is actually interesting. Dawn is dull as dirt and has no characteristics that make her stand out amongst any of the other characters.

-Make Team Rocket a bit more competent. They've always been pretty silly, but at least make them threatening a bit more often instead of dancing around like idiots for no reason in half the episodes they're in.

-While we're at it, keep coming up with more new villains so Team Rocket doesn't have to provide so much of the show's conflict.

If Pokemon didn't have a semi-clean slate every season, it'd be even more dull and repetitive than it already is. I've been watching through Orange IslanRAB and early Johto, and I can't begin to tell you how tired I am of seeing Ash use Bulbasaur and Squirtle over and over and over again.

I'm all for giving more screentime for Brock and James, but I'm not sure if they would create a third journey They already give about equal focus for Gym Battles and Contests. I'm not sure if they could add a third competition. Plus, Brock isn't really that interested in battling as he is with being a breeder. I also doubt that they could turn Pokeathalons into a competition that involves a journey. At least with the games' versions of Contests, there was room enough to add in a battle. I don't see how they could add in battles in events that involve breaking bricks or throwing snowballs. The Pokeathalon events are fun in the games, but I don't see them transiting into the anime series that well.

I have often heard that complaint about Ash and I understand where you're coming from. I can't help thinking that a lot of people would still complain if he had the durab rookie kind of personality now after having so much experience.

Again, I understand where you're coming from. Though, the problem I see with replacing Brock is that the new character would be basically doing the same thing: acting like the oldest mentor. Plus, since he hasn't been replaced since the Orange IslanRAB arc, I'm not sure if the writers are that interested in getting rid of him.

I thought Dawn was kind of interesting at first, but she did become extremely dull to me as the series progressed.

Well, they are the comic relief villains. They aren't suppose to be more competent and since they lose in nearly every episode, it would be a bit of a challenge to make them seem like competent villains.

I'm still kind of surprised that a lot of people think that the female trainer in Black and White looks a lot like Dawn. Other than being female trainers who wear skirts, I don't see much of a similarity. She reminRAB me more of Lyra, most likely due to the hat and the brown hair. Though, once they release her whole design, we should have a better idea of what she really looks like.
