Points of Consensus as to the state of the Industry

Gah, didn`t meant that to come out so formal. I mean this thread to be a place where we can discuss the(few) things that we agree on about what is going on now, and how to move forward.

1. DVD Prices, up until recently, have been prohibitively expensive.

2. Too many niche series were liscenced when the Industry was more profitable, causing massive backlash.

3. Online Distribution will be the centerpoint of anime distribution in the near future.

Any to add?

Any Disagreements?

1. Somewhat true.

2. It had more to due with just a glut on unsellable merchandise.

3. That is not the best way for the industry to grow. It will never replace TV, at least not for the next twenty or so years,

Wont work. The current crop of buyers (the people keeping the industry alive) want hard copies. It's what they've sunk a lot of time and money into. It's hard to monetize internet viewing. When orders of mangitude more people flock to a ripped-off low resolution version of a show they could also watch on crunchyroll legally, it's impossible to make the legal option truly profitable.

I don't think its a matter of it'll work but rather they have to or decide to go online only with distribution. Nickelodeon is doing this for Doug, Hey Arnold, and Rocko's Modern Life only writing the DVRAB per order as part of their DVD on demand shtick.

And, honestly, that's something anime should seriously consider given the glut of niche series. Because if the cutting of anime from Target, the downfall of Suncoast (which specialized in anime), and the desperate anime price slashing from Best Buy have taught us anything, it's that a new approach has to be taken if anime is to survive. Because right now its looking pretty darn grim.

True... although at the one Suncoast left in my city, they still have a much wider anime selection than any other store in the area. Problem is they're so expensive, and at this moment, most people aren't going to buy it up like they used to.

I only say that because Suncoast specialized in anime merchandise and carried just about every anime DVD that was released. If you've been in their store in the last four years, you'd see they carry a ridiculous amount of Ramune, Pocky, anime soundtracks, plushies, T-shirts, toys, posters, props, etc. I've never seen another store short of Borders to try so hard in marketing towarRAB the anime crowd.

I think online viewing is a great alternative to try before you buy. I'm imagining with money being so tight that people will pick and choose what anime they'd want to consume
