Poets: May I ask a painfully boring and mundanely generic question? What inspires you?

I've always admired those who possess even the slightest shred of artistic ability. Especially since I have none, of course.

It's not so much what as it is when. When the brain wants to dance, I guess -- I really don't know. I've long given up trying to read myself. Not that I write a lot of poetry but every now and then something good will come out.

Why, it is everything... C'mon, name me something, anything that is not inspiring...

I don't believe that it is possible for anyone to have not even the slightest shred of artistic ability... It is probably lying dormant inside you...

turtle soup has mystical powers over me, but....
I find the main impetus for my mindless drivel, is to relieve me of the dull ache that lingers in my head....I am a Narcoleptic Insomniac, sleeping 4-5 hours a day...every other day at times......the gearing is a bit much, but it can be quite productive at times....I find the pathos of most human experiences to be very comforting, particularly in difficult emotional circumstances...and my respect for words has become a true calling in ways...I am always awed how words...just words, can find a fit and move so many to reply, run, challenge, kill, Love, cherish...sheesh, you see where I am going here...it's the words that inspire me to seek out...
words

GREAT QUESTION

Sublimity in nature. Things like the swelling of the ocean, experiencing solitude, stillness, and stars. Also romanticist things like classical paintings, cigars, etc.

I always try to look at things of this sort from a different perspective apart from what it actually is and more along the lines of what it can tell me, how it can make me feel, etc.

I've always thought a gifted Poet is someone with the unique ability to paint pictures or capture feelings with their words.
Their words and phrasing seem to come to them effortlessly, and it drives me crazy since I lack this gift and very much envy them theirs..

People as a whole... humanity in general. When I need anger or any depth of sadness, I contemplate the world as a whole. When I need strength, I look to my children. When I need happiness, I think of my friends. That is what inspires me.

I'm not a poet but my answer would be finding beauty in everyday life.
my own example
I was lying on the floor and the light and the railing of the stairs was making the loveliest reflection
Darkness and light
the light allowed me to distinguish a string of dust but it dangled from somewhere I couldn't see. And all around me were bits of dust.
I blow out of my mouth, out of curiosity and the string delicately twisted and turned..dancing so elegantly. but all the while, the dust that surrounded me lay still. Then I question..
How is it, that this object so far-removed, can be so affected
When everything close to me seems so completely unaffected?

Good Poets and writers can create stories and poetry on a whim without any sort of inspiration.

I get inspiration from originality
Abstract is rarely original but when it is its incredible.

I've always found it easier to say put down my feelings or thoughts in writing rather than saying them out loud. Everything around me, the slightest thing can inspire me, friends and family mostly. I can't really explain it. You know when you go somewhere unfamiliar and then you smell something like I don't know a roast dinner and it reminds you of a time when you are sitting around the dinner table passing the spuds with the family while you talk about your day or whatever. That can inspire me to write about the place I had visited.
Just really my love for writing I suppose.

Your word choice is exquisite! =)
Of Course you have artistic talent. Just your question sounds like poetry itself, the way you take your time to forshadow, the predictabilty of your question.

I actually chuckled a little. Don't underestimate yourself.

Not to sound too cheesey here,
But honestly, it's hidden talents like you who inspire me.

I have a couple of very talented poets in my contact list, and one that I shamelessly follow around because he reaches me - or touches me, whatever. He might think I'm a stalker, so I lay off... lol BUT -

I am inspired by many things, some great, but most just specks on the horizon. Again, it has to reach me, or touch me; yeah, touching is good.
