Poets - a question about cliches?

I know as writers we are supposed to find unique ways of describing things - but do you think there are universal topics: love, hate, war, humanity, etc. - that are difficult to describe without a little cliche? In moderation of course.
 
MUST be avoid.
And if the choice is between a cliche and silence
-- then silence. Much better.

That's where the thought process comes in. It is difficult, but so much more rewarding to find another way to say the same old thing.

Aren't all poems and music lyrics about love , death, etc? How many differant ways are there of writing about it?????
 
cliches are are all around, because they express basic (sensible) facts in simple wording. If the poet uses a simple wording construction, then theses cliches will be very useful. complex wording scheme doesn't allow cliches easily. as a matter of fact, as being soft spot(s), they may hurt the poem
in teen age literature cliches like: "I love you," "you broke my heart," etc, don't seem as cliches, but for the well established writers, a change of wording scheme would be quite necessary to match the complexity of his/her wording style.
 
Perhaps, we are trying to write the cliches of the future, by saying in a new way, that with which we all agree, that with which we all can feel.
 
I agree with you completely. This is why I don't write about “love, hate, war, humanity” etc. I am not a very good poet, not by a long shot, so I just know that I would crash and burn if I attempted any such topics!
 
Never in a million years would I use a cliche, in fact hell would sooner freeze over.
 
Buk has a good point...intentional use of cliches..are cliche !!!

Things do not become cliches without having a bit of universal truth about them...some things are difficult to describe without resorting to any kind of cliche at all.
