poetry - why are word pictures of another person's pain ok but not word pictures

of your own pain? I've noticed over the past like 25 years or so that poetry that takes a picture of what another person's pain might look like are ok, but if it's just an outpouring of your own pain in general isnt' ok. Of course there are exceptions to this... but why is this? Is it just that people don't want to read endless accounts of people's pain? or is there another reason?
