Poetry, Scams, and Publishing? oh my?

i love writing poetry and writing stories. It is my DREAM to have something published. I recently made the mistake of entering a contest online for poetry. Eventually i wised up, did some research, and it was a scam.
I just wish i knew how to get my work published in a real, genuine way. I am above average in English and i just want to continue my dream but how do i get started?

i want my work published more than anything. Please, any advice or comments would be nice.

PS: Famous Poets and Lavender Aurora is a scam. for any other victims, i feel your pain. :/

Masterblaster is right that Duotrope is a good resource for information about poetry publishing opportunities. But the specialized book "Poet's Market" is probably better for your purposes than "Writer's Market." (Your local library might have copies of both books.)

If you aspire to write poetry that's good enough to be published in a quality journal, be sure to read a lot of good poetry. It's always good to read any zine before submitting your work; that's the best way to get a feel for the kind of work the editors are interested in. And poets who are just starting out should learn all they can by reading the work of more experienced writers.
