Poetry.com wants to put my poem in Immortal Verses?

I got a paper in the mail telling me that I have talent and what not, and was very proud of myself! I always thought it was a good poem, and that is why I submitted it! But when I showed it to my mom, she was proud of my work, but didn't believe in Poetry.com. She said that she believes that they are trying to rip me off.
I didn't understand her reasoning, so she looked up on google poetry.com, and a LOT of bad things came up. The people standing up for poetry.com sounded like idiots, and now I am unsure what to do. My mom is under the impression, yes, my poem will get in the book if i buy it, but otherwise, no.

Does anyone have any experience with this poetry.com thing?
Does anyone have suggestions for a real poetry site, *free* where i can submit my poem and get real feedback?

Yup - I submitted a poem and had it published and even bought the compilation. It is just a way to get you to spend money. They put everyone's poem in. Once I got the compilation and started reading the other poems I realized most of them weren't even spell checked!!! Def. no editing going on here!
 
it was smart of you to ask this, but i would so believe everyone who said it was a scam. your mom loves ya and she just wants to protect you from a disappointment and so yeah....thank your mom for me
 
Good for your Mom for protecting you from this heartless scam. And good for you for noticing that the people who praise Poetry.com all sound pretty pathetic.

There are many online poetry workshops where you can post your poems for feedback. Choose carefully to find a workshop that's geared to your level of experience. Some beginning writers aren't ready for the intense level of criticism they find at the more advanced workshops. Here are two sites you might want to check out:

i have had like a million of those letters sent to my house cause i submit poetry to that all time. but then io wanted to see if it was real and i submitted a bunch of random letters and they still sent me that.

I actually did that only to find out its a scam. If you want a poem published, look for a writers group in your area and join them. Many of them put together pamplets or short books of poetry.

sure, you could pay 500$ for plane tickets, then another 100$ for the "souvenirs", but it's all scams.
believe me, it's not worth anything. i've gotten those things for the past 7 years. worthless junk.

try searching google for free poetry sites; and see what the feedback for the sites are.
 
I submitted a poem of mine to poetry.com, and got the same letter with the same book. I ended up ordering it, I don't know why. But when I looked through the book, I couldn't even find my poem. Don't buy it.

This is a thriving business that does not consider quality when publishing poetry. That doesn’t mean the books they publish don’t contain some good work, but that’s not why they’re published. They know a certain number of the poets whose work appears there will pay $60 for a copy of "their" book, or attend $600 poets’ conventions (not including meals or hotel) because they’re winning an award. That’s how they make their money.

Virtually everyone who submits a poem becomes a finalist. ABC’s “20/20” did an exposé in which an entire second-grade class submitted its poems. Every one of them received an offer to publish.

They've scammed thousands of hopeful poets of hundreds of thousands of dollars under many, many names. Absolute Write's Bewares and Background Checks board has several hundred posts going back for more than five years detailing what the company has promised its poets and what they've actually received, plus the many names under which they've done business, including poetry.com, the American Library of Poetry, the International Library of Poetry, the National Library of Poets, and Watermark Press.

Stay away and count yourself lucky. (Absolute Write has a good poetry board, BTW, with many accomplished poets. They can help you evaluate your work and direct you toward legitimate placements.)
