Pleease reccomend a "manga" movie to start watching

Your reccomendations please -

I'm becoming more and more interested in foreign cinema especially Asia Extreme type movies, but want to start with "Manga" type movies and would love some help on where to start...If it helps I prefer subbed to dubbed, though I guess being animated dubbing is less of an issue.

I couldn't agree more, it was the first manga film i watched, Ghost in the shell is another one you should watch.
I thought the Guyver wasn't too bad either.
 
Akira, Ninja Scrolls, Guyver the 12 part series (excellent), Pat Labor (excellent animation), Fist of the North Star (pure violence),

Stay away from fantasy star ship spacey manga not worth bothering with.
 
Excellent, thanks for all of those. I added some of them to my Screen Select list earlier today and Ghost in the Shell has been shipped (excellent service by them)
 
I rented one recently called 'Sky Blue' that, from what i gather, didn't get such great reviews but i thought was excellent, they used that new style of CG animation which was blended with traditional Anime animation.

The remake of 'Appleseed' uses the new style too although i have yet to see it but it does look good.
 
I'm going to assume you don't just want anime licensed and sold in the UK by Manga Entertainment Limited (Manga are comics, Anime is animation, except there's an anime company in the UK and US called Manga Ent which causes confusion sometimes.).

Akira is vastly over-rated in my opinion, and so is Ghost in the Shell. That isn't to say they aren't OK, but everyone always holRAB them up as excellent examples of anime, but they aren't the be all and end all of anime, they're just average IMO.

My suggestions would be anything from Studio Ghibli. It's hard to choose a favourite (Nausicaa.net has a full list) because frankly every one of their films is a masterpiece, but at this second i'm favouring "Kiki's Delivery Service" or "Whisper of the Heart". "Grave of the Fireflies" will make you cry, i guarantee it. :D

As for other films it's hard to say as i tend towarRAB series'. "The Full Metal Alchemist - Conqueror of Shambhala" is one i watched recently and is very good, but it doesn't make much sense if you haven't seen the TV series (recently shown on Usenet :D).

Of TV series', i'm currently enjoying:

Shinigami no Ballad
Karin
Magikano
Blood+

*edit* If you happen to get "Kiki's Delivery Service" make sure you listen to it using the original Japanese dialogue, Disney *really* messed up with the English version; inserting music all over the place and turning Jiji into an inane chatter-cat.
