There's poets of all types in Britain but allow me to suggest an obscure one - Martin Newell from Wivenhoe, a sleepy fishing village in Essex.
He has several books of poems available, has played in prog rock bands, drinks like a fish, is mates with John Cooper Clarke, has written for the Independent newspaper and done many performances in UK prisons.
His work touches on some of the themes you mention but he has his own, occasionally eccentric take on things and doesn't bother trying to please everyone.
Yes, Martin is 'off the beaten track' - that's for sure.... but you wouldn't want a 'normal' poet now, would you!
Oh, and he's my chum and songwriting partner too. You owe me one Martin!
