Please recommend a phone for music/jogging.

my girlfriend is looking for a phone that she'll be able to take while jogging. something she could bring along for safety reasons that has great music capabilities. rather then bring a phone and mp3 players, i'd like to find a two-in-one solution. bells and whistles (camera/video/etc) are not important as much as music and being able to make a few calls if desired. maybe a phone that automatically turns off the music if a call is being received? i've read a little on the new sony walkmans, but cingular doesn't have them as far as i know.

oh yea... local service providers are cingular, verizon, and t-mo (i think). so cingular or verzion is preferred. a lot of calls won't be made, this would be more for music then anything else.
 
If with verizon the get the e815 or lg8100 as there pretty good mp3 players the samsung a950 is not that good as it cuts in and out also the razr will play mp3 but does not have expansion slots. cingular i suggest the v635 its a flip and has a good mp3 player if she cant wait til the new walkman w710 comes out I think when it does im getting this phone.
 
If you want music I would go for the W600i, although it can only git about 80 songs, that is still a reasonable amount. Just beware you cannot expand the memory. Its not out yet thought, so your probably best off with the W600.

I seriously recommend you not get the E815 for music use, clamshells are VERY annoying (personal experiance with my V635) if they do not have exterior music controls, and you will have to put extra money into a large memory card for it too.
 
The following units work well on Cingular:

Motorola ROKR E1 (old w/iTunes)
Motorola SLVR L7 (new w/iTunes)
Motorola ROKR E2 (coming soon and holds more than 100 songs)
Sony Ericsson W550 (only 256MB memory)
Sony Ericsson W600 (same as W500 but adds EDGE data)
Sony Ericsson W800 (high end w/2MP camera and Memory Stick Duo). Does not work on 850MHz (one of Cingular's bands).
Sony Ericsson W900 (high end 3G phone, but does not work on 850 MHz)
Nokia N91 (extremely expensive)
Nokia 7610, 6670 and other Symbian based models (big and bulky). MP3 player UI isn't as nice as the others.
Samsung SGH-I300 (3GB hard drive, just don't drop it)
Samsung SGH-Z510 (3G unit, slim, stereo Bluetooth but no 850 MHz)
I'm sure I'm missing a couple. I've had the ROKR E1 and SLVR. Both are nice units, but limited to Apple's 100 song limit I'm waiting for the ROKR E2 myself.

a couple of links went to a place called "myworldphone" - is that place reputable? i wouldn't mind spending a little extra to get one of those better phones.
 
i just realized my father already has a cingular and we're going to add onto his account and merge into one of those family plans rather then get a separate plan dual-phone plan. so cingular is the carrier.
 
So this means that you will have to get a phone throught Cingular? That narrows down your options, probably your best bet is either the W600 or SLVR. The SLVR might be better since it has a very simple form factor, nice look, and it can be hacked to hold up to 1000 songs (memory will cost you though). As far as the W600 goes, its still a great option, but with no removable memory it does get limited, and it doesn't have that sweet feel to it that the SLVR does.
 
i was looking at the SLVR today and saw that they have it in pink - i'm sure she'll be all over that one. does anyone know if the music stops if a call is coming in? i mean if she's jogging and listening to the music and she gets a call, does/ can the music stop or will the phone vibrate (which i doubt she'll feel if jogging)? i do like the fact that i can buy more memory cause that means i won't have to switch out her songs every other week when she tires of them... so that's a big plus. thnx for all the replies thus far.
 
Motorola E1 and L7 have the features you are looking for. They have a memory slot. If you are an iTune fan, make sure to purchase the Cingular version and not the imported one.
 
ok, leaning towards the SLVR L7 - why is it important to get the Cingular over an import? does "unlocked" mean the same thing as "import"? i'm able to get an unlocked SLVR cheaper then i can from cingular directly, so i'm thinking i'll just get whatever free phone they're offering right now and pick up the unlocked SLVR elsewhere. anything i should we looking for or not for?
 
I'm having the same problem as the OP....

The key here is JOGGING though. With an Ipod I can just get the armband and go jogging. But a phone would get messed up real fast if I were holding it (palms sweaty and all) while jogging (easy to drop).

So basically I'm lookin for a phone that'll play mp3's w/ some kinda accesory to assist joggers (armband,neckband or something creative along those lines) so that we can use our phone while running with out putting it at serious risk.
 
If you buy a Cingular version, it already comes configured with iTunes, web browsing, multimedia messaging, etc. If you buy an unlocked version, you will have to configure the services yourself (not an easy task). The downside of the Cingular version is that you can not use it if you were to switch to T-Mobile at some point. An unlocked version may or may not come with iTunes.

Finally, if you are listening to iTunes and a call comes in, the iTunes will pause and you will hear the phone ring. Once the call is over, you will have to press the play softkey to restart iTunes where it left off. It's a decent implementation.

If you end up not going with Cingular, T-Mobile has quite a few mp3 enabled phones, V360, T809, T609, SDA (this has the cheaper mini-SD memory and music buttons on the front) etc.

EDIT: If she can live with just FM for a lower price, there is the Nokia 6103 too. Comes with quite a snazzy earpiece from my experience with the 6101.
 
My wife and I are on Cingular and she also wanted a MP3 player/phone combo for jogging and bicycling. She has the SE W600i which I highly recommend. The music will stop when an incoming call comes in. The FM radio is nice also. It does not have the expansion card slot but it is very simple with the included software to add and remove songs. The phone itself we both also like very much. It is a good solid phone. It is now on sale through Cingular for $50 after rebates which is a steal. I would not get the SLVR personally just from what i've seen from friends that have them. Very flimsy and cheap I think and you have to deal with the itunes junk instead of just regular mp3's. Just my 2 cents......
