I stepped into the moonlight and let my mind roam. I thought about the events of the day.
***********
"You have lessons today," my mother called as I walked out the door.
Yes, mother I have lessons every day. Thank you for pointing out the obvious, was the reply I decided not to voice. To disrespect the Alpha's wife was a warrant for punishment. Believe me; I would know. As much of a smart alec as I am, I was in trouble all the time, but that was not why i held my tongue. I reached the edge of the woods around our house, and increased my speed. I came to a stop a little ways in and shed my clothes. Completely naked I got down on my hands and knees to begin my change. The process is a mixture of pleasure and pain. Pain as your muscles and bones tear apart so they can mend themselves into a different shapes, and hair begins to grow all over your body. Pleasure as you assume you other half. The half of you that has better reflexes, stronger muscles, and heightened senses.
The whole process takes about two to three minutes. When I was in my full panther form I stretched. Extended and retracted my claws, then started off deeper into the woods.
With my panther senses I could hear the mice in the underbrush, the birds in their nests, and father away the deer beside the stream. Perfect just what I needed to keep my mind off things, a.k.a the guests we had coming later. Redirecting my course so that I was headed toward the deer I took off running. I loved being alone in the woods. Werepanthers aren’t as social as humans, we like to keep to ourselves. Why, then you ask, do we have packs? Because without them we would have gone extinct long ago. Now though, thanks to our amazing reproduction skills there are plenty of us to go around. When I was just a little ways away from the stream I slowed down and quieted my footsteps. Being in the cat family us werepanthers are light on our feet. If we didn’t want to be heard we simply weren’t.
The deer scattered as I burst out from the woods. If I was hungry I would have caught one, but as it was I was fine. Finding a big, warm, flat rock by the stream I curled up to take a cat nap. Just as I was about to doze off my ears pricked. Of course the moment I relax my brothers decide to come find me.
