When i start the car (only in the morning, or the 1st start of the day) it makes a sound like the exhaust pipe isn't hooked on tight (up front near the engine)............ plus i had an engine light on, i went to autozone and advanced auto to get the light tested (codes)..... the code/s at auto zone said my O2 sensor/s were goofed..... the codes at advanced auto said my catalytic converter/s were not working at full capacity. ........... since then, i unhooked the battery cable for 6 minutes, put it back on , now the engine light went out so and i can't get the codes to write down..... to make sure Toyota (or any other mechanic won't rip me off).
I plan on driving the thing to California from the east coast soon......... what should i do to make sure i'm driving a reliable car across country... Thank You All Very Very Much, Pls. Respond. Peace. Joe - my email is below: the car has 80K miles, I keep it well maintained though.
If you have any questions for me, please don't hesitate to email me, Thank You. PS: nice website here

Never disconnect battery to clear codes. The scan job, if done correctly, will turn off the light. The lite will come back on soon and you can scan it again. An o2 reading does not indicate a bad sensor. If the sensor is bad the code will tell you so. I would suggest you go to an exhaust shop and have your cat converter checked. You have o2 sensors at the in and out of the cat and it may be your problem.
NEVER replace any part till you KNOW the problem. Stay away from dealers, you will get ripped.
For general maint. o2 sensors should be changed at 100k miles.
