Please help me pick a device

Hi guys,

I'm finally upgrading from my G1, and I need a bit of help picking a device, and I was hoping some of the more experienced members may be able to guide me a bit.

1st of all, I'm located in Canada but am open to purchasing a phone from the States, as long as it's an unlockable GSM phone.

I just want a quick and reliable phone, good reception, good battery, that will hopefully last me a couple of years,

I basically had it down to three phones, but I'm open to any suggestions.

1) MyTouch 4G

- I really like the fact it has physical keys down at the bottom and a track pad, plus the notification led (which the caprivate doesnt have)... These small features are for some reason huuuge to me
- According to a few reviews and comparisons I hear its faster than the captivate
- Build quality is supposed to be great.
- Unfortunately I'm reading the battery is terrible (but this may not be a major issue for me as I currently do not have a data plan, and usually keep my brightness relatively low)

2) Samsung Captivate

- Great Display
- 16GB space included is great (although I dont plan to use my phone as a primary mp3 player or video player, but cant complain about extra space)
- Phone is sleek and slippery (I have a bad habit of dropping my phone, but thats nothing a nice case cant fix)
- A long time ago I had some really bad experiences with samsung and vowed never to buy one again. I dont know how well this phone is built, but I've been reading samsung still doesnt compare to the likes of HTC.

3) Motorola Atrix
- According to some reviews it can be a bit laggy (a huge no no, for me) Maybe custom roms will fix that though.
- Again I hear the battery is not great on this phone either.

I hear the G2X is great as well, but is just a bit pricey for me, but I might shell out some extra money if its really that much better.

.. Sorry I know sometimes these things are extremely subjective, but judging from what I've said, any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Would you be willing to wait for the GS2? If not I would say to shell out the extra cash and get the G2X -- it is a much better phone than the other three :D

well, I'd prefer not to wait just because my G1 screen is cracked and it's starting to freeze up and stuff too. I will admit that I havent really researched much about the GS2 (or the G2X for that matter). From my understanding the GS2 doesnt have a definite release dates in Nort America as of yet.

G2X on the other hand from just a quick craigslist price check is priced at about $425-$450 (slightly used)

Atrix can be had for about $300-$350 (slightly used)

Mytouch around $250 (slightly used)

Captivate around $225-$250 (slightly used)

... so that means I need to shell out nearly $200 more for the G2x opposed to the captivate and the Mytouch... I guess I should do a bit of research on the GS2 but thank you for your input... much appreciated.

thanks for posting that article, looks like a great phone. I'll keep it in mind for future reference.

But for now I think I'm going to have to stick with one of the original three posted, and i'm beginning to lean towards either the mytouch for build quality or the samsung for the brilliant display... not sure which one to go with as both can be had for about the same price.

Thanks, The Sensation looks like a great phone but it comes out next month. I think I'm just going to be going ahead and picking up a phone in the next week or so. So I think I'll have to stick with something that's already been released.

But just out of curiosity, how come you suggested the Sensation IF I dont want to root right away.

It's supposed to be coming with a locked bootloader, so it will take the devs a while to crack it. But having the new sense 3.0 I think I'll be able to live with out root for a while. I'll be picking it up on the 8th of June. Had a G2X and only kept it for 7 or 8 days, had too many problems and LG seems to have bad quality control.

Well I have had the g2x for a month now and I can say coming from the nexus 1 that this phone is the best I've owned So far. Everything is fast, great screen, fantastic camera, screen size ( 4"), weight, gorilla glass, and very easily rooted. If you have the money do your self a favor and get the g2x, you won't be disappointed I can promise you that. The sensation will be nice but in my opinion 4.3" screen is too big. I had to sendmy first one back but have had no problems since. Just read some reviews and you'll see. Don't fall into the hype of tri-core phones and waiting for the next best phone to come out cause you'll wait for ever. So I hope this gives you +1 for the g2x, its so great. And yes gingerbread is on its way as well as ice cream.

I appreciate all the input guys.

Annnd I've decided I'll give it a week, I hear they're making progress with the Atrix bootloader so if that's looking hopeful by then, I'll definitely go for the Atrix.

If not, I'll probably just go for the mytouch... G2x is just a bit out of my budget, and I can imagine the Sensation will be too, upon initial release.

.. I have a week so if anybody has any other comments or suggestions, it's always appreciated.

Thank you for all your input guys.
