Please help I'm so worried

My Husband and I went to friends for dinner last night, he had about half a bottle of red wine and a normal amount of food.

We came home i went to bed, and he was watching some football. About an hour later I heard him come out of our bathroom and shout, then a huge crash. I jumped out of bed and found him half way down our stairs with his eyes wide open and dead still. He looked exactly like he was dead, staring into space, and no sign of life in his body.

I went hysterical, trying to shake him, slap his face and wake him up, he wouldnt respond, so i ran for the phone to dial 911/999 and he just shot up and woke up and tried to get up but was really disorientated and panicky, he also seemed to be gasping for breath.

We made it to the bed and lied him down and i called an ambulance who came and did some ecg, blood sugar and blood pressure tests, also sats.

They all appeared to be normal, but he was an awful grey colour and felt dreamy headed.

He banged his head when he hit the stairs, but he said he was already out of it before he hit his head and doesnt remember doing that or me screaming.

He seemed to lose about 15 seconds. When i got to him he looked like people do when they are killed instantly like on films, where they just stare into space with no vital signs. I am still vomitting as i am so shocked, everytime i shut my eyes i see my darling Husband looking like he was dead. Obviously he isnt dead, but i am petrified as to what it was.

By the way he is 46 years old.

The ambulance people didnt really know, and he refused to go to the hospital, so we are none the wiser this morning. He is in bed now sleeping and feels spaced out and tired he told me. I have made a Doc appointment for tonight (im hoping he will go). We have private medical insurance so i will be getting a referral to............... WHO? a heart specialist, or a neurologist?

Does anyone have any idea what this might have been? Do people knock themselves out and faint with their eyes open???? I havent experienced anything like this before so i havent a clue what it was. I'm so frightened i watched him all night and keep checking on him every 5 mins now, im so scared he will do it again, it was just like he was dead. I thought he had fallen and broken his neck and was gone. I feel so upset today. I just want to know what it may have been. Hopefully the Doctors will have an idea as i will be insisting on a load of tests.

Any ideas anyone?????? please :(

Worry, it sounds like your hubby had a seizure or a slight stroke. And you are right, he needs to get to the doctor and get this checked out to make sure that nothing serious happened. Your GP should order a bank of test to rule out any major issues. I would think that they would get a CT scan and an MRI at least....

Good luck and let us know...

Many years ago, my husband was brought home by a friend from the pub. He had had 2 beers, then gone to the men's room. Just after he had finished passing water, he fell in a heap, cut his head, and could not be revived for a couple of minutes. His friend was really freaked out, like you, he thought "DEAD". The next morning I marched him off to the doctor. Same things, many tests. The verdict: When you have low blood pressure, as he does, alcohol, followed by urination creates a situation that "shorts out" the vagus nerve (the big one from the brain to the stomach, via the pulmonary system) causing a sudden drop in blood pressure. This is enough to cause this faint-like incident. It is harmless, the stitches in his head were the worst aftereffect. Now, when he has any alcohol at all, he uses the pedestal, and sits through the event. Still can get a bit light-headed, but it passes quickly. Hope this has helped.

Thanks I Bake for replying. I dont think it was a stroke as he has no symptoms at all now, except he feels tired and a bit spaced out, and has a sore chin as he hit it on way down on the wall.

I am going to insist on all sorts of tests and we are going to see a neurologist to make sure there isnt anything going on in his brain.

Will keep you posted. It was the open eyes and non response to me that scared the hell out of me. It really was like he was dead for about 10 seconds. Ive never been so scared in all of my life.

Seraph,

That is incredibly interesting as the doctor told him exactly the same thing, that urinating can cause a sudden drop in BP after alchohol. My Hubby did feel a little woosy before peeing, but it was after he stood there peeing he keeled over.

What a horrible experience to have witnessed.

He may not have any symptoms now of a stroke, however, that does mean he did not have one. It does sound like he may of had some type of seizure. Being a man, it does not surprise me that he refused to go to the hospital, you know us women, we always overreact. My husband has pulled this trick with me on at least 3 or 4 occassions. I have had to literally threaten him with divorce and the loss of seeing his daughter if he did not get immediate medical help. Three of these four occasions resulted in him being hospitalized for three to four days. His most recent incident was that he did have a heart attack (he is 47). If this were my husband, than I would demand that the doctor admit him to the hospital and to perform all the necessary test. Inform this doctor that you need to be reassured that all the necessary testing has been completed so that something like this is not going to occur again.

Good luck and let us know how every thing turns out.

Hi,

We went to the Neurologist last night for a consultation. He asked a zillion questions, my Husband was useless he is so un forthcoming when it comes to his health. I answered most of them. I think the Doc thought i was some domineering nagging woman, i dont care i want to get to the bottom of this.

Anyway, he had loads of bloodwork done, all the brain function tests, the Doc gave him a thourough checking over. From looking at him he seemed to think he looked dehydrated , which didnt surprise me as he hadnt drunk any fluids in hours. He said from our description it was definitely a faint, he thinks brought on by the fact Hubby had, had an upset stomach prior to this, drank red wine without water, and because he thinks he was dehydrated too it lowered his BP to such a level he fainted, made worse by the fact of where he was and falling down some stairs and banging his head too ! He also had another resting ECG done which was perfect.

He has to go back on saturday for his blood results and for the Doctor to take another look at him. So hopefully they can either throw light on why it happened or put it down to the fact there were a few things which may have contributed to him fainting.

I'll keep you posted. But in all of this im struglling like crazy as im having flash backs. Every time i close my eyes i see my hubby in my arms eyes wide open and not responding. I really thought he was dead. It terrified me, and im struggling to cope with the aftermath of how its made me feel.

thanks for listening and posting back to me.

Update on Hubby.....

All blood tests came back ok. The Doc is concerned about Hubby's ecg. It was showing longer than usual gaps between beats. When calculated he is only getting 41 beats per min the usual being around 70/85. Hubby has been told for many years he has a slow heartbeat and its never bothered him medically, but the Neuro thinks that maybe as he's getting older it could be affecting him, in a way thats making him feel faint every so often. But because he has fainted he wants to refer him over to a cardiologist to do some tests and try to find out why he actually fainted.

He is going for his cardio appointment next week. I will keep posting.

Good luck with your hubby worrywart. That sounds so scary. I am so glad you got to a doctor with him. Sounds like his slow heartbeat has alot to do with a fainting spell. They should get to the bottom of it and perhaps put him on meds. I know my pulse runs 80 to 90 all the time. A bit fast I think even thought my blood pressure runs 110 over 70. Which is good. Just have them run all the tests they need to do. Sorry you are so frightened. Than can be so traumatic. I hope you won't developed anxiety issues. You both take care!

Ted,,

I've had anxiety probs for about 4 yrs now, so i wont develop them LOL.

This really frightened me so much, when you see the person you love so much looking like they died and you cant wake them up its the most upsetting thing ever.

The memory of Hubbys face like that is fading a bit now, but the shock is taking me a while to get over.

So anyway were off to cardio this week i will keep you all posted.

thanks :)
