Please Help! I am lost and confused and in need of guidance.?

I was rear ended by a driver at a relatively high speed. My back pain started out as sore and achy all over - I'll call that my ouchy pain. I began physical therapy sessions four times per week. Eventually, about one week after the accident and undergoing pt, it progressed to sharp, painful, and stabbing - I'll call that my knife pain. I also intermittently experience a sharp, very defined leg pain that is only on the left, rear side of my leg. It almost feels like a hot wire being rammed down the back of my leg.

Anywho, after three weeks of pt, the "ouchy" pain is mostly gone, but the "knife" pain is still there and very prominent. It is mighty painful to sit, bend, cough, sneeze, pretty much do anything that involves my lower back. Even with narcotics, anti-inflammatories, and muscle relaxers, the pain is still very dominant. I am very frustrated and going bonkers trying to tell my physical therapist that her TENS, ultrasounds, and massages aren't a great help with this "knife" pain like they were with the "ouchy" pain. I am scheduled to see a doctor next week, but you all know how long it takes to get some accurate guidance.

Here are the questions:
1. Is this a normal, well as normal as one could expect, reaction to physical trauma?
2. Could this be a herniated, bulging, protruded, etc. disc? (It would be mighty helpful if you've had one and have experienced the type of pain I described.)
3. Should I continue the PT or wait until I get some professional answers?
4. Is it true that back pain usually "haunts" you for years to come? Would you seek appropriate compensation or chance it?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!
