what seismic waves are measured by seismographs on earth's surface

Close to the epicenter, seismographs also measure surface waves; Rayleigh and Love waves. P and S-waves are body waves. Liquids to not transmit S-waves because they are transverse waves. P-waves are longitudinal pressure sound waves.
